Hi,
I am currently running WinME with an 80gb hard drive split into 4 partitions.
I want to have the NTFS file system to d/l dvdr releases which as you all know you can't do with FAT32.
I don't want to format the entire drive and lose all the stuff i,ve collected and part d/l.
If i just format the c drive and install XP on there, will it detect the other partitions?
If it does can i then move files from FAT to NTFS, either by drag and drop or UNRARing from the d,e or f drives to the c drive.
Can i also move files the other way, from c (ntfs) to d (fat).
Is it true that i read somewhere there is a utility to convert fat to ntfs with no loss of data?
Cheers guys

XP can do it during install, or you can use partition magic to do it afterwards.
You will be fine as long as you read all the shit and do not just smack the keyboard around.
You can drag and drop files to, no problems, I know cos one of my old partitions was FAT32.
That utility you want would be partition magic, XP can do it afterwards, but I believe it makes shitty small clusters or sumink. PM will convert to proper size clusters and retain ya data.
I have converted drives many, many times and have only lost data once, and even that may have been my own doing.
PLZ don't ask about converting NTFS to FAT32 and retaining data, that "can" be very tricky sometimes, but why would ya want to do that?

NTFS to FAT32 without loss of data is almost impossible, i think.
I meant moving FILES from NTFS to FAT32.
Thanks for the answers and the heads up!

I know moving files from FAT32 to NTFS is easy, no probs at all, other way tho, I have not done myself so I do not know.
The main hassle I had with converting NTFS back to FAT32, whilest retaining a usable system, was sparse files, is that it? Luckily I found a tool online, forget the name now, that sorted it for me, but it was a huge pain in the arse tho.
I take it you are a UK lad? Sure hope so. Outta interest, I wonder how many of us are UK, I reckon it has to be above average, whatever that may be, compared to the likes of SR and FH, just seem to get that feeling.

Is the Isle of Wig-it near to the Isle of Chicken McNugget? Or was that just Marlon Brando in Island of Dr. Moreau...
I forget things.

@Apocalipstick
Small Bloody World!!!, and thank's for the offer but i'll decline
I just tried to upgrade ME to XP but it's insisting i have the SirCam virus!
I've checked all the Reg keys it says would point to this but they are all as they should be.
Sh1t, it means i'm now gonna have to do a clean install, bugger.

isn't sircam a remote procedure call (RPC) exploit? you need to go to the windows update site to patch it if it is.
AVG virus scan is decent enough to use.

I just did a full scan with AVG and the latest DEF files, naddah, not a thing!
I can feel a Format c: coming on.
I can't even tell XP to ignore it as it won't install.
Updated media player to 9 last night and my comp kept locking on startup,
even when i went with bootlog.txt, thank christ for restore points , cheers Bill, jeez never thought i'd say that :-o

Hah, fuckin system restore has never ever worked on the few occasions I needed it, so now I just disable it. I have my AVG and sygate setup and upto date, and most probs I have come across have been easily rectified without system restore.
Also, TBH an upgrade to XP is generally accepted as not as good as a fresh install, so go for a fresh install if you can, just be carefull, last fresh install I did was infected within seconds LOL, before I could even get online to patch the vulnerabilities. What I would recommend is to get the cleaner for the virus that uses the RPC vulnerability, cant remember the name, and stick it on a floppy so you can run it if need be after you connect to the net to get the patches.
