I've tried this on several files with WinIso but the extracted file will not play. If I however first burn it and then copy the .dat over it works fine. any clues?

I've done this a few times, I recommend IsoBbuster. What I did with that was right click on the .dat file, click "Extract but filter ONLY (something something) frames". Don't save the file just yet - name it whatever the hell you want, just be sure to add .mpg at the end. Example "AVSQO1.mpg" That worked for me!

With IsoBuster :

Click on the MPEGAV folder.

Select all dat files and right click and select Extract but filter only M2F2 Mpg frames.

Save the new file as filename.mpg. It will automatically be converted to a compliant mpg file.

Tnx guys! got it to work now. I couldn't use that 'filter only mpg frames' though. that gave me a 0 bytes file. but extracting it normally worked however. Bah, WinIso sucks!
