I am rather clueless when it comes to vcd's and changing them around, making them playable... I just got a dvd player that plays vcd's (finally) but non of my vcd's will play  .. is there a certain format i need them in on the vcd? I heard mpeg and avi work just fine but almost all my vcd's are in that format... i asked my nerdy friends and they don't really know.. so i thought i would ask here..

also if anyone has a link to a good program to burn vcd's it would be much appreciated i am using cheetah cd burner, and i'm thinking my problem may be there..

also what is the difference between SVCD and VCD, can a dvd player that plays vcd's not play SVCD

sorry if this came up before, but i did not know what to put in for a forum search... :?

first, most certainly your dvd-player plays original vcd's but not burned cd's at all. try to play a burned audio cd on it. if that doesn't work either, then i'm right. it's the same thing with mine (but this one is quite old). normally the newer players don't have problems with burned cd's.

second, this is nero burning rom, the program i'm usually working with. it's easy to use and has a lot of possibilities.

ed2k: Nero.Burning.ROM.v6.3.0.3.Ultra.Edition-ORiON.ShareReactor.rar  [22.96 Mb] [Stats]

but of course there are a LOT of other ones

third, the difference between vcd and svcd is that vcd is mpeg 1 and svcd is mpeg 2. as far as i know a player that plays vcd's is also able to play svcd's

hope i helped you a bit. :)

thanks avatar :) i just tried a burnt cd, and it actually does work though but maybe it is just capable of that and not a movie file. I can return the one i got and get a new dvd player if that makes any a difference in performance.. if so any suggestions, or anything to look for on the box? so that when i get one i can play my own vcd's i made?...

I'm assuming now that the dvd player is the problem but if someone sees it otherwise please share :D

try to burn an mpeg file with nero and then use the vcd in your player. if the mpeg file has not the right specifications nero will tell you. and if the program doesn't have any objections and the vcd still won't be played, then i'm at my wits' end.

i did a really long post explaining everything and when i posted it said
'no post mode specified' DAMMIT that keeps happening.

In short DONT use media player to burn anything, even your dinner!
Dont burn mpg files as data they wont work.
You cant play avi files in a dvd player.
Go to http://www.dvdrhelp.com for lots of info.

Good Luck

John

*EDIT*

Not all dvd players that play VCD can play SVCD but there is a header trick u can use to 'fool' your player. Go to that website
and spend a little while reading around.

I mentioned it in my original post and couldn't be bothered to retype it!

I think you'll find there called DIVX players, you can get them from ebay for
about ?100, they play everything apparently. :beerchug:

yes great, and then you have still half the avi's which are xvid to watch on the pc. furthermore, retail divx players are far more expensive. about ?400 at the moment. at least the ones i saw so far. better wait for an mpeg 4 player at a decent price.

Most are firmware upgradable.Or as another option..buy a mod chip for your Xbox and you can do anything.

Modded Xbox is the way to go if you can afford it. But standalone dvd players do rock. Now i can watch movies in bed i've gone through so many that were 'waiting to be watched"

great stuff
