OK, it turns out the problem with my corrupt GFX is caused by my i.o voltage (which should be +3.3v) dropping under 2.5v(!) can anyone with more experience with PC power supplies tell me what's likely to cause this? is it fixable? and will changing out the PSU fix it or could it be a motherboard problem.
If it helps I'm running an
Athlon 2800+
Abit NF7-S
Thermaltake 480w PSU
1Gb DDR400 ram
Hercules Radeon 9800pro
1Western digital 250Gb HD
1 Seagate barracuda 80Gb
1 NEC 1300a DVD writer
1x Lite-on 48x cd writer
Hercules GametheatreXP 7.1
I would have thought that this was within the PSU's limits, can anyone shed any light on this??

You're ABSOLUTELY sure you've set any switches/jumpers right ?
If you've got acces to one ,pop in a other GFX card (preferably just a heavy beast like yours) and see if the symptons occur again....
I pity you if you have to measure voltage at every point on the damn board......
Strongly suggest you visit Abit's support forums though ; we'll be just shooting in the dark giving half-arsed solutions
EDIT : nice board BTW - you SURE you GOT ALL BIOS settings right ?

LOL, yeah, that's a good point ohgod, and I've tried 2 9800's in the board and the same symptoms occur
The problem is I'm not sure if it's the board or the PSU.

It's just the ABIT website
I've just posted over at ambmd.com, I think it might be the PSU though, I can watch the I/O voltage go up and down and make it do so, buy playing with the fan speed controls on the PSU, if I turn the fan speed up, the I/O voltage drops
It's not like it was a cheap and nasty PSU either

you shouldn't share your main plug with anything doofus, especially if you have 480W (!!) PSU and need all the power.
Seriously 480w? You excessive bastard, you

should be, but try use just one for your monitor and one for your pc. Then leave your hairdryer and nail varnish remover out for the time being.... see if that sorts the problem
