A stab in the dark here, does Pots mean 'Plain Old Telephone System' and you mean the splitter for your audio and ADSL modem had gone U/S. The one that takes the normal 2-wire telephone line from the LJU and 'splits' it?
If it's that, I've never heard of a line-splitter going knackered before :-o No wonder it took 2 days to figure out.
