What would you recommend, gaming is the center theme.=P

Want Pentium, and 1 gig of ram.
Already have the HD's and DVDR burner.

So need ram, MB, case, PS, SC, VC, and processor..

Go for an Athlon 64 instead, mine's like shit off a chrome shovel. I have an Asus K8V mobo with onboard 5.1 surround sound (AC 97) and Thermaltake Xaser III case. I'm only into retro gaming though so can't help with the GFX card.

Best advice, delay till after xmas.

You will then have the new faster athlon cores, and amd motherboards with PCI-Express. Anything you buy now will be out of date faster than usual ;)

For gaming, AMD owns Pentiums ass by the way, its application and Encoding that pentium is better at, that's not including the 64bit, which well... amd is the only one with a working one ;)

AMD owns Pentium's ass anyway. AMD still uses the clock cycle as it should be, whereas Intel's crappy architecture has to do less work, but more often. Intel just extends pipeline length to produce chips that supposedly run at a certain Gigahertz (Hence the reason you had to increase speed by like 50% to see any significant change from P3 to P4).

Intel sucks.

AMD Athlon FX @ 2600 Mhz beats a P4 at 3400 Mhz by 10 fps on Wolfenstien-Enemy Territory.

Athlon rules. Especially with a good mainboard with nForce chipset. Dual memory also speeds things up. I'm on Athlon 2600; 512 MB RAM (Dual DDR),Epox mainboard (pretty cheap, but has everything I need + is easily overclockable + nForce based + has SoundStorm 5.1 onboard, and I assure you Sound Blaster sounds like farts compared to this) and GF 5900 FX. I have no problems playing Doom 3 on high detail - or any of the new games.

AMD all the way dude. 64 3400+ is a good choice right now. However, this late in the year, I'd wait til January. There are always price cuts after xmas (the biggest selling time of the year).

I wasn't gonna go 64 bit.
I was gonna get the higher end 32 bit chips. Like an AMD Athlon 3000+.
After Christmas, I mean.
Is 64 really that much better?

It takes two clock cycles as opposed to one to perform simple calculations. Yes, it makes a big difference.

Problem is at this particular moment, there's not that many 64 programs or even os to take advantage of it. Just gentoo and a preview version of xp.
