Von frost on Zaerc's tracker has asked a couple of times about whether a rip i did was Q-pel and Gmc free. So i downloaded the latest G-Spot beta and found out the last one i ripped(Deathwatch) was Gmc free but not Q-pel. What do those do and why is he asking? Is it so it will play on a standalone? Should a guy rip so it's always gmc and q-pel free? Somebody please explain these to me.

Bassline told me a little bit about it awhile ago but i can't remember what he said

Q-pel and Gmc, as I understand them, are non-compatible Mpeg-4 matrices.

Most standalone players won't load a file that was encoded with q-pel enabled. It's a hardware issue, chip related, and no software patch will fix it.

Same with GMC. Most players don't like it. You can get an embossed look, or a smeared look...most of the time it's simply unwatchable.

Complicated, unnecessary crap. What the hell is wrong with you people? What's wrong with just normal Xvid or Divx with MP3 audio? We have to use these weird, stupid options that don't run on standalone DIVX players that cost less than $300?

Well i rip all my stuff using XviD with Mp3 audio so how did my file end up having Q-pel if i don't even know how to rip it with or without? Is it a setting in Gordion Knot? Where is this option?

It's a setting in DIVX Pro 5, as far as I know.

It's under Pass settings.

Well i'm going to rip another one tonight so i will look for that in the XviD settings before i do. I never use DivX for ripping. Thanks for all your info dude.

There MUST be an option somewhere in your Xvid encoder for those.
Just look for it.

Erm, actually they are part of MPEG4 advanced profile and part of the standard are they not? Its just shit companies can't put the processing power into their chips to handle them?

The improvements from these techniques are pretty damn good, they are advanced techniques but as far as I'm aware are part of the MPEG4 standard, its just standalone manufacters failure to implement it.

To turn the on and off, its under First/Second Pass, profile>more, Quarterpixel and Global Motion Compression, for standalone compatability they should be unchecked. Remember, what ever you change on first pass, must be done on the second.

Ahhh there they are. I'd been looking all over in Gnot but couldn't find where. Ok Q-pel is now unchecked also in both passes. Thanks guys
