This problem just seems to appear after a while for some ppl. I once had a system that was running fine, no new software added or updates applied for over 2 months as it was not connected to the net, and it just started.

Actually, its because windows tries to read the info from the avi file, even if you don't open it. Any avi with errors in, ie. could be something that isn't important, just a missing byte or something like junk in the header, windows can't understand it and takes ages reading the file.
That reg-key tells explorer not to even attempt to read the contents of an avi. With the windows updates, watch out because media and core updates normally restore all the registry keys

Does anyone get a similar problem with win2K? It's been driving me mad for ages, as soon as I click on any avi file the explorer window hangs and when I hit 'X' to close it I get the 'this program is not responding' error and have to hit 'end now' to close it.
It's something to do with the preview in windows explorer, cos if I customize the folder to show icons only it is no longer an issue.
It seemed to start around the time I upgraded my version of GKnot, so I thought it might be codec related, but movies play fine in PowerDVD 5 and WMP.
Any ideas?

or just make two files with .reg extension in text editor:
file 'stop.doing.it.reg':
Code: | Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler] @="" |
file 'ok.I.want.it.back.reg': Code: | Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler] @="{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}" |

I don't know what's in zip file, probably the same method
this registry trick worked for me with XP and 2003
check with regedit if you've got the same entry in registry (as in second file)

Tried it.
Didn't work.
Guess I just got to customise each folder where I store avi's.

Inside the zip there is an .inf file. Contents of the .inf:
Code: | ; Windows XP explorer movie fix. ; ; WARNING - Use this file at your own risk. ; ; Executing this file will remove a registry key which makes explorer load shmedia.dll. ; Simply put, this removes the annoying "permission denied" errors when trying to ; move/copy/delete AVI files. ; ; To use this fix, right-click on the file and select install. Done. ; ; Information about the registry key from multiple sources. ; Inf-file compiled by Moo (2002-03-22). ; Idea by Duxus. Thanks to the kind people of "[BBB] Sweden #01", you know who you are! :-) ;
[version] signature="$Windows NT$"
[DefaultInstall] DelReg = Reduce.Reg
[Reduce.Reg] HKLM, "SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32" |
As you can see, it's different. The only thing I can tell you is that it works on XP.

Upgraded anything lately JD?
My problems seemed to start when I updated Gordian Knot or the XVid codec.
