mostly memorex. trying out both + and - but can't really see any difference in stability.

Problem is with proggys like dvd-copy'ers that don't have a 'verify' option. I did a copy of a dvd with Pinacle the other day. The damn thing took nearly 2 hours and hogged all my cpu power, only to find the disc was unusable. =( I used a RW disc just in case, but stilll.. waste of time!

I've tried various medias and + seems to be more reliable.

I've had bad experience with princo (total crap imo), and good with traxdata & verbatim (both dvd+r) which works fine with x4.

I think this drive is just about ready for the scrap heap :(
Me, PS22 and papa_scream22  are having problems with it. Mine rarely writes a data DVD, occasionally give me "power calibration errors" and is a general PITA to get working, I've wasted ~10 blanks today trying to burn 6 movies to DVD.

I can't speak more highly of Pioneer, had this drive for well over a year and I'd suspect their newer drive as just as good build quality.

just out of interest, is it on a shared IDE channel? if so rip out whatever shit you got on it and try it solo.

Power calibration errors I used to get 4 or 5 years ago with media that my cd writer didn't support. It was because the drive was junk, got a plextor and never looked back

well they will cost about ?100, you can get a decent DVD-r burner nowadays for about ?70. So its just a matter of how much burning you do, I don't think anyone can advise you eitherway.

Does anyone have any information about the cost of dual-layer DVDs? I'm going to stick to single-layer for some time...

JD, as for your problem (sorry, didn't have time to read this thread earlier), it happens very often that a burning program says "operation successful" while in fact it isn't. My last CD-RW, a Teac it was, was always saying that, then failed verification in nero, but after all it turned out the media were usually recorded ok. Well, sometimes they indeed weren't. It has happened to me earlier with several drives, because dirty heads, 2 drives being connected to 1 IDE etc. If this happens to me more than 3 times, it means that it's high time to change my drive. Definitely it's not a firmware problem (unless, of course, the new firmware is able to improve compatibility of the drive with used media).

Not in itself, theoretically it shouldn't matter, but in some cases it may interfere. Don't ask me what it depends on; I don't know.

The opposite happened to me a few years ago.. Everything read by my Toshiba dvdrom did produce crc-errors when it was alone on the ide cable, but if i put another drive like a burner on the same cable, the toshiba would read everything just fine..

The drive must have been lonely or something

(Could be ViA's fault too.. I will never touch any ViA stuff ever again)

I always used ViA, now I'm on my first mainboard with a different chipset, this time it's nVidia and I must admit I like it more.

Or you can be a snob and buy Intel's CPU.

I've got a funny feeling that my IDE cables may be dodgy, I'm going to pick up some new ones and see if that helps.
