To be honest I burn at 2x or 4x max anyway just to be on the safe side!!!

But if ya want the ultra fast 8x speed then hope you fix the props Emperor,

but think of the mess on the floor around where it was sitting.



ok i have a quick Q.....i've got myself 6 files added to Nero to burn and it's stating 4,205,0mb used.....and i see nero's red line set up at about 4,500mb....is there a way to squeeze any more on the disc than 4,500 or is that the final limit any DVDr can handle?

i' know they say 4.7gig but i'm pretty sure thats not actual data you can fit on em....someone please enlighten me

[edit] i burn at 4x even though i can do em at 8x...but the media i bought was only 4x anyway

If you close the disc off (no further writing allowed) you can squeeze abit more data on but not sure how much exactly!

and are there any better burning tools than nero?....it's east enough for me to use just wondered if any may be better?

Nero plays merry hell with me and some other DVDR peeps (especially with NEC 1300A's!)

Not as fancy looking as nero, but plain and simple and does the job right.....for me anyway!

i've got a pioneer 107D...nero seems to be ok but i may give that one a go if i run into troubles, cheers for the link *click*

My CD drive can burn up to 48x... why do you guys burn them at low speeds? I've heard two different things.

1) Burning at a high speed causes problems with the disc (which I've never run into when I've wanted to watch a movie on here from a CD-R ).

2) Burning at low speeds causes the burner to run longer, creates more heat, and causes problems.

Just burn it in between I take it?

Each to his own. I have more discs go wrong at the high end of the speed scale.
So for saefty I just go for 2/4x.

But again the discussion is defunct because it's all releative to media and make of drive.

Some are better then others and some media writes better etc etc.......

Akthough I see you're point about burning for longer and heat/problems

If you burn at lower speed the disc your data is safer (it doesn't deteriorate so quickly). I hope you're aware that the speeds discussed here are DVD speeds, DVD 8x does not equal CD 8x.

i used to always burn cdr's at 8x even though i could do em at about 52x


now atm the DVDr's X4 and probably will stick to that even though i can go faster

Since we're already going a bit off-topic: when I want to burn multisession DVD Nero pops up a dialog box with a warning it may not be readable with some older drives. I usually ignore such warnings, but since I didn't have the need to burn multisession DVD's yet, I still don't know if it really doesn't work on older drives. Did you ever experience any problems with that?

@Bass, I don't think it makes any sense to go for higher speeds anyway. It's exactly the same as with CDR's, at some point it made me wonder if they were ever going to stop increasing the speed. I mean, what's the difference between a 40x and 52x drive? A few seconds, especially that above 24x-32x the nominal speed is not even real (they get much poorer results that the producer declares).

With DVD's it takes 20 or 30 minutes, but with so much space being cleared for new downloads I don't mind waiting several minutes longer, it's never that urgent.

Kyle doesn't have a dvdr drive so he was just commenting on his experience of DISC burning.
Saying that he burns at the fastest (48x) and asked why we burn at low as possible speed!

But that good news about burning at low speed increases reliability of the data.
Didn't know that and I always burn at low speed!

yeah i definately think the same about not needing to go faster...whenever i did burn cdr's at high speeds the damn thing sent nero mental and more often or not if i did sburn discs at that speed i found my cdwriters shelf life drastically dropped.....so i am inclined to go slow with my DVD's now for the same reason...whether it does make a difference i have no idea but i'm happy waiting 30mins for a DVDr at X4 and verifiying it (after pauls suggestion )

i'm burning discs now while i'm not up to much and also did some earlier today and i've cleared about 30gig so far

i think i may hook up my external 160gig firewire drive to the DVDr burning PC soon and clear that off so i can have even more space for *clicks*

danmit i've got the new avengers series 2 to burn and the whole lot comes to 4,554mb and nero won't overburn that large

i don't wanna have to cut anything from a file to get them all on a disc but i may have to

@Bass - yes, series are the worst problem, especially when it's only a few MB's of the last episode... Out of curiosity, do you have any method of sorting the movies you burn (eg by genre or director) or you just burn them without even thinking about it? I'm talking about full-length movies, not series, obviously.

i've tried to get the same genre on a disc so far but i'm running out of movies to burn on the that PC

this PC (the emule one) has got about 200gig of movies on it 160gig of it on a firewire external so i think i may connect that up to the burning one tomorrow and clear loads off as the movies on the firewire drive are categorised quite well so will be easy to have them all nicely organised on DVDr's.

I hate all that xtra crap.. I never ever watch them.. just dosn't interest me.. I mena I have watch myu share of deleted scenes but you know.. in almost EVERY case they were deleted for a REASON.. they suxed!!

The only dvd's I ave ever watched the full xtras were on those cool James Bond disks I got made buy the James Bond fan club.. that had proper decent documentaries on a fwe of them.

Apart from that wat extras are worth it? None that I know of.

Jynks i disagree with you there,i've recently got a TV show (comedy) shown in the UK called "Spaced" on DVD and the extras are great!....commentary by most of the cast for every episode deleted scenes that definately where worth seeing and out takes that had me laugh just as much as the show did that all in all puts that little extra finishing touch to a DVD that makes it worth those few extra ?,$ or whatever currency you pay IMO

and thats just one instance where i enoyed the extras from a DVD.....i have many more here that WHERE and ARE worth having if a ripper rips them
