Shouldn't do as long as you have a TV build in the last 15 years or so.

Worked OK PCA. Is it worth me checking framerate and changing settings accordingly each time?

Hmm. Never thought that Nero could convert .avi to DVD

I always use AVI to SVCD/VCD/DVD from cucusoft. Never had any problems and the quality is good.

So if I used cucusoft to convert avi to dvd, would that just create an image to burn? Also, how long to convert an avi to DVD?

No it will create a .mpg file

It's a pain killer. It takes 5 hours for me ...but that depends on how much GHz your cpu has.

I have 2,4 GHz and 512 Mb ram

But i'm trying to find another program that can do the same thing but with less time spending

Nero will and it's much quicker.

of course, its only a crappy transcoder being the downside ;)

Anything that's meant for human consumption is just better putting it through TMPGenc, i don't think there's any point in using neros inbuilt thing unless your a retard or something

The only time I bother to convert avi to DVD I use Nero, it's quick and as it's always for other people I couldn't care less if it's not the very best quality, it's certainly good enough.

In all honesty I'm hard pushed to see the difference between the original .avi and the resultant DVD

Nope, I think you're somewhat exaggerating the lack of quality to be honest

PCA, well I think you totally overstating neros ability to be honest

I always find it hard to understand why people seem to choose the shit route when it comes to computers... it doesn't cost anything or owt. But on every site, there's always people that recommend some hack-second best program and it normally boils down to them settling for unsatisfactory results or not bothering to try something else.

There's a hundred and one alternatives, and I'd recommend 10 or so over nero any day.

The major problem with nero is that it is incapable of keeping detail and blurs the picture, which makes for harder work on the human eye which hates to focus on 'out of focus' images. Its just so much simplar to use TMPenc, and you get better results. You wait a bit extra, but this is with the assumption you want to watch the thing.

AVI to DVD encoding I've done with CCE, TMPGenc, nero and a whole host of other all-in-one appz that are around these days, most of them range from shit to about the same as nero. Best is obviously still CCE, and for a decent result and simple setup its still TMPGenc.

Biggest problems are pixelation and blurry picture, the first is annoying, the latter is unacceptable.

Everyone gains from people usign better encoding methods, but you still get people using some lame ass alternative and it generally boils down to someone being ill informed in the first place. See all the shitty rips floating around. Same deal.

To be honest spending extra time encoding for better quality for people like my mother, who REALLY wouldn't notice (or care about) the extra quality is utterly pointless and whilst nero may not be the best quality it's more than good enough for the people I give these disks to and enables to to knock out a disk quickly and easily.

TBF, I have tried a couple of methods now, and whilest Nero does indeed have a quality drop, it is also the fastest and easiest.

I agree with PCA, the ppl who this is intended for are cool as long as it is watchable, and even nero gives acceptable results. I only make a few disks for neighbours and friends, who generally watch on some crappy TV and cheap DVD in the bedroom. The drop is just not enough to make a difference.

@Charmed, 5 hours?!?!?!?!? It takes me around 1 hr 15 minutes to 1 hr 50 mins using nero.
