Hi All!

Am currently trying to find info on the below possibilities for a network set-up.
Google?in hasn't brought much luck, so thought would post here to see if anyone can help out?

I?m moving to a shared house and we are going to get an 8MB internet connection and want to split the connection between rooms.
I can easily do internet connection sharing in windows and just set-up a workgroup BUT what I would really like/need to do is set up a server some where central in the house that gives out the internet.

So this is what I would like to attempt to do:

? Have all clients on the network restricted in bandwidth (so each of us only has 1MB etc, to stop people hogging the connection etc)

? Have some sort of log in that people enter to get internet access (to stop people on the network who share files etc but don?t want internet access from getting it!)

I have NO IDEA if any of that is possible, but presume it is.
Would prefer to do it in Windows but not adverse to attempting other options.
I?m hoping there?s some network software out there that does this but all my searching hasn?t brought anything?.yet!

Appreciate any form of help/guidance, in any way.

Thanks.

I want to do this stealthly too, so if anyone has any idea how to do it let me know.

Netgear vigor have routers with the capability to restrict bandwidth to a certain port (virtual port or whatever its called). You login to the router, and you can restrict the port speeds. Problem with my shit box router is that when you enable it, it disconnects the pc from the network temporarily whilst you restict.

You can also setup a proxy server (needs to be on 24/7), and then setup everyones connection to connect via the proxy. Here you will have to login to the proxy to get connection (ie when i connect to my unis wireless, you have to login to its proxy). You can then restrict the router to just your static ip.

Well if i read correctly i guess an IPCOP (Linux Distro) machine will do it. (i'm running one)
For restricted bandwidth:

And for the login one, you can run a proxy server with username & password, or you can manually block users by configuring iptables:

Plus it keeps logs of every visited webpage and from which client it was done so it's pretty easy to identify.
And finally it also has a Intrusion Detection System (snort) which log and block internal and external intrusions.

It's pretty easy to install and configure and pretty much all old machines can do the job. Give it a try.

that's instead of a router though right? All the pcs connect into that one machine which is connected out via a modem/single port of a router?

Yeah IPCop acts as a router, if you only have one PC you can connect it directly to your ipcop machine, otherwise you'll have to buy a switch.
So:
[ Modem ] -> [ IPCop ] -> [ 1st PC ]

Hardware needed: 2 NIC's for IPCop & 1 NIC for PC.

or

[ Modem ] -> [ IPCop ] -> [ Switch ] -> [ 1st PC ]
........................................................ -> [ 1st PC ]
........................................................ -> [ 2nd PC ]
........................................................ -> [ (..) PC ]

Hardware needed: 1 Switch, 2 NIC's for IPCop & 1 NIC for each aditional PC.

Thought as much. My routers shit and if i can replace it that's great.

Need a good internal ADSL modem with with large connection handling, routers have these cheap as shit modems in and they always tend to freeze when two people run emule + torrent.

Yeah give it a try it's great, it's really stable. Mine is running in a P2 @ 333Mhz with 192 Ram and a 5GB Hardisk with a 2 NIC's and nothing else, it has been up for more than a month and never crashed. Plus if you play online games you just put the port's game in high priority and you can be running eMule, torrents and have like a stable 30 ping while playing CS.
If you decide to give it a try and if you need any help of some sort installing it or something don't hesitate to ask :)

emper0r that sounds exactly what I need!

I have a spare PC that can put Linux on and an 8 port switch to connect all the network PC's too. I was presuming I would need to buy a router, but like spud says they can cause problems if running emule/torrent together etc etc.

Linux I have never installed (used yes) so might be a bit of a task so will read up and do an install of one of the Linux distros and then see about IPCOP.

I forgot to add that another problem I might encounter that would need help on is the fact that 3+ of the PC's will be using P2P appz and I gather that they will have trouble connecting eg lowid in eMule or passive in DC+ etc etc

Thanks for the help guys and might need some extra info on IPCOP later emper0r :wink:

Nah you don't need "uber linux skillz" to get it running, just get the IPCOP instalation documentation and you'll be fine, you just need to follow the steps.
As for LowID you won't have any problem with that you'll just need to port foward the port of the p2p program and it will run smooth :)

Make sure your modem you buy isn't cheap though, else you'll get the same connection drops you'll get with a router ;)

:wink:

Think I'll try the one I've got and then fork out for a good one.

Will keep you posted on how it goes, no doubt will need some more help along the way.
