Hey guys, my friend and I have come across a problem while trying to build a video library for use through windows media center edition from PC to Xbox 360. The problem is that any videos encoded using divx or any other codec that we cant install into the 360 (without modding) wont play on the 360 because we cant install the codecs.

we're willing to rip dvds to full size video files (around 4gb right) if that is the solution we will have to with . If so what would be the best recommendation for that? Or does anybody have any ideas for ripping a dvd to a decent size video file without using a codec?

There is a way to get the divx to play apparently :

Playing Divx on media center ?

Download Windows Media Encoder 9 from here and then Install.

Put your divx video in ?My Videos? and then open up notepad, in the document write - mms://*INSERT PC IP ADDRESS*:8080 and then save your notepad file as *name of video*.asx

screen shot of what your notepad document should look like. (note ip address replaced with X's)

**for example if your video is called perfectdarktrailer.avi the notepad file would be saved as perfectdarktrailer.asx**

save the file to the directory of the video your wanting to watch.

Open up Windows Media Encoder

In the wizard dialogue popup box click ?Custom Session? screen shot

In the sources tab change ?Source From? to File and then browse and open up the video you want. screen shot

Use the other tabs to change the quality of the output. In this case we have set it as ?DVD quality video? screen shot

When you?re happy with your settings click ?apply? and then start encoding.

Open up media center on your 360 and locate the .asx file and play it, you should now be able to watch it on your xbox 360 J

also just another little note that i discovered earlier today; as the movie is been broadcast over your network (much like internet radio) you will need to start the .asx file on the 360 at pritty much the same time you press 'start encoding' on windows media encoder because it will just skip to whereever the encoder is on the file, you also won't be able to pause for long either or it will skip forward aswell.

can be slightly annoying but its better than no DivX movies.

got this from official xbox forums

Sound like a PITA to be honest, I'd pick up an xbox for use as a media centre

I guess so, It's the only thing i'm REALLY disappointed with about the xbox 360 hardware, divx playback these days should be mandatory.

BTW does your xbox360 dvd playback have any sync issues?

That's impossible, mpg by definition is mpeg1 or mpeg2 codecs :)

PC, we had a problem getting media center to play dvds at first because a decoder(?) had to be installed, then it played the dvd fine on the computer. However, it was late and we didnt check it on the TV because we didnt anticipate any sync problems. we'll check it tonight though.

Spud, gosh cant you let me be wrong every once in awhile?

So while im here, without re-reading every sticky and endless pages of posts OR sifting through doom9/dvdhelp again;

Are there any suggestions for ripping dvds to mpg?

I just networked my xbox 360 to my pc and it will read/play all the pictures and mp3's off of it but none of the video's, from what I can gather it will only play WMV on the hard drive of the 360, or at least that's what mine is telling me in the menu. I downloaded the windows media video 9 vcm codec yesterday to see if I can convert an xvid/divx file using virtualdub into wmv and copy it onto or stream to my 360 but I haven't gotten around to it yet, will let you know if/when I do.
