anybody have any suggestions for the best way to go about making animated gifs using emulators, other than trying to take tons of sequential screen shots?
my best guess would be using an app that records your desktop, mostly used for instructional videos, i would think? if so, does that work? either way, any suggestions for that type of app?
Or, is there a better way to do it?
if anybody is having trouble understanding what i am trying to do, i can elaborate...

Depends on the emulator, MAME has this option built in for example (press shift f12 to record to MNG format)
Most do AFAIK

Apparently GENS supports movie recording, and apparently the option is in the CPU menu - good luck

so, to follow-up on this thread, the movie recording function you mentioned is for recording gmv(?) files, which are strictly button sequences that are recorded to make tutorials for games that require button combinations.
my next idea, was to use the s-video out on my geforce card. i attached a coupler and s-video to composite converter, and hooked that up to my composite to digital cable, which i plugged into the digital a/v input in my DV cam. that didnt work. if it had, i would have hooked up the DV cam through the firewire port to the pc's firewire port and captured it.
since that didnt work, i was wondering if anyone could tell me why? my s-video out on my geforce to my sanyo s-video in, works great. so, im guessing that the s-video in source has to have some kind of power behind it?
that is the real purpose for this post, i am interested to know the answer to that question.
otherwise, im dl'n camtasia right now which is for screen recording (primarily used for recording powerpoint presentations and such)
it should work great unless there is a conflict like when i try to take a screenshot of a video file while its playing.... ill be back with or without a new night trap sig... wish me luck.

I would use fraps to record the emulator to harddrive. Unlike many screen recording programs it can record from anything running on the screen... games, whatever.
Then just load the movie file up in what ever gif animation app you use and select the frames you want and the time they are to run for... bang you have it then.

iirc shareware is a type of frog that form a small communist colony in some of the South American jungles.
Like all of my posts, I'm pretty sure that's true based on a sequence of neurons firing in my brain in a particular order, not any particular external fact or evidence.

(if anyone wants me to stop updating this, just lock the thread; but ive got this working and look forward to showing off my new sigs set soon)
UPDATE:
I grabbed fraps and camtasia off the mule, and I had my money on Fraps. only problem is, it has a small amount of functionality (even the full retail version) and i couldnt change the hotkey for recording, which happens to be a function in my emulator. hence /cant record. it may also have something to do with a conflict between the emulator and fraps because i dont think the emulator runs like a normal game does.(?)
anyway, i loaded up the newest version of TechSmith's Camtasia and it has functionality for miles. I recorded my first game movie and it turned out perfect.
i thought there was a new version of imageready out, but i guess not. once i get my old version loaded, ill see if it still works with CS2. then ill get to work and my next post will feature my new sig set. w00t)!(

huh?? Yea you can... just clikc on the "movie" tab and then change the hotkey in the section "video capture hotkey"
Camtasia is def the best video capture app around. Though it has some problems capturing sdirect X and open gl windows. Fraps is a way around that limitation.
