get a dvd recorder will make things a little easier
remember the better the source, the better video will come out. just some tapes out there have lost quality over the years like video rentle place or home movies

careful with dvd recorders, they tend to introduce ghosting and all sorts of nasty gunk if you don't get a decent model. Make sure you read reviews before making a purchase.

thanks for all your responses.... been doing a little research while i was gone for a few hours on this topic... my computer is old and i dont think a capture card would be worth it becuase i read somewhere that you need at least 20gb hardrive space to record but im only i have 20gb lol.... i guess im the market for a dvd recorder ... while doing the research .. i read somewhere about a microvision protection on vhs tapes which dvd recorder detect and will not copy... im sure my vhs tapes have that since most of them have come from out of business video stores....
As for macrovision, you can purchase a box that will remove that junk although i can't give you a specific model. They don't cost lots but its a fair chunk, i saw one for around ?30 a while back, i'm sure you can get one cheaper. Check ebay.
