What CD-R discs should I buy?

I am looking for high quality discs to burn my divx movies.
Just figured I'd ask, seeing as how most of you are very educated in this subject.

I don't really care about price, just quality, and life span. I am burning then deleting from my harddrive, hopefully never to download again.

I get them from Costco for $12 a 100 spindle.

Cheap = really short lifetime, only a year or so. I would not rely solely on 'really cheap' stuff, unless you like re-downloading a few years later

A few of my earlier backups are unreadable, and i've been doing this for a few years. Mid-priced media is fine though

I recommend DVD-r though :mrgreen:

, although the lastability of media for DVD writeables is not known, tests shwo that they outlive cd-r media apart from really high quality cds like verbatims for example.

spud, but been 100% on these cdr's for 4 years as they change.

Went from $10 - $15 - $12 in that time.

Still play my first burnt avi to this date.

"Pulp Fiction" of Kazaa.

Plays Nice, Looks FUCKING HORRIBLE, as kazaa rips are.
But it plays, and no artifact loss. :lol:

that's a very select case then, it's very odd you don't have any CRC by now. You watched all the way through? As the problem is that the data layer breaks and playback freezes, and a CRC error comes up.

Almost garanteed with cheap media because the silver/green layered that the data is stored upon just doesn't last. The darker the colour of the dye, the better the quality of cd.

Put cd-r quality into a google search and it will come out with lifespan of the media. That's a good buying guide

I don't know about them to be honest, I know they are more scratch resistant, or rather less affected by scratches. I would have thought they were good quality, I have some and they seem to be good.

However, the darker dye convention is in regards to:
silver>green>light blue>dark blue>gold

where greenish is poor and dark blue is best. Cheaper cds are made in a factory that uses light green dye (I forget what it's called). If you do a google search you can find lots of tests about this and better explainations than I can give.

The technology for making cdrs has vastly improved, and thusly the lastability of the cds has followed suit, but it's still the trend

The color of the CD-R disc is related to the color of the specific dye that was used in the recording layer. This base dye color is modified when the reflective coating (gold or silver) is added. Some of the dye-reflective coating combinations appear green, some appear blue and others appear yellow/gold.

Visual differences between various media types are irrelevant from the standpoint of their actual operation. At 780 nm, where CD-R recorders and CD-ROM readers function, the media are, for all intents and purposes, indistinguishable from an optical recording standpoint. They all "look" the same to the devices.

The gold-colored CD-R uses the PhthaloCyanine pigment and a gold reflection layer. As the pigment is transparent, the golden reflection layer shines through the bottom side giving the "golden" look. Compared to the other colored media, the reflection contrast of the golden medium is the highest and the durability of such CD-R's is said to be over 100 years.

The green CD-R, the cheapest of the three, uses the Cyanine pigment. By itself, the pigment is blue in color, but together with the gold reflective layer, the bottom appears green. The latest cyanine formula's have been altered to allow life span of between 20 to 50 years.

Blue media is made up of Azo pigments. Like cyanine, it is blue in color but unlike the green CD-R it uses a silver reflection layer which gives the blue color. Blue CD-R's are as durable as golden ones.

Look for cds that are gold/blue and made in the Kodak factory. These are the best quality cds. Factory is tied in to the colour dye used.

Yes said that above. Verbs are dark blue, highly compatible and made in the kodak factory I believe.

They are more expensive than the other types though.
