I'm just playing around and trying to rip my very first flick. Reading alot up on doom9 but still, there are a bunch of things I don't get.

First I tried out XMPEG but I couldn't figure out how to get the whole file, as it only wanted to rip half of it... Besides it gave me a error -> shutdown program message at completion..

From what I've come to understand most of you guys use GKnot to rip, and it seams to be the one comonly acknowledged as the best to use (without me knowing why, though)

First of all.. What's the use of the 'buffer' in DVD decrypter? Is it something I have to pay attention to? What happenes if it runs low? will my final .avi be fucked? Strange, but I couldn't find any info on this on doom9... And I didn't wanna register in the forum to ask.

Then, following the tutorials over at Doom9 I've started up Robot4rip and everything works honkey dooley, untill I get to the finalize point. Then it can't find the r4r_enc.bat file. After a little searching I've found that this file ain't on my puter. Kinda strange IMO since I thought that GKNOT pack was supposed to install everything I needed? Anyways I've been unable to find this anywhere, and since I have no idea at all what I'm doing here, I really don't know if it's important or not....?

PS: I'm currently trying out the Auto Gknot because that's supposed to be for dummies (like me). Looking good so far... Is there any reason for not using this?

i also have tried using gordian knot and been completely stumped by some settings on it even after reading doom9 so i went for the easier option of getting AutoGK which pretty much does the same setting as as a pro would but automatically and very little work from me and it seems to have ripped my last few movies pretty well 8)

here's a useful link to it and tutorial (not that you need to learn too much  )

[Edit] almost forgot if you haven't got this little tool i suggest getting it,it's very handy in working out the AR settings among other things if you want to use the advanced settings in AutoGK

I tried using AutoGK when I did Blood Sucking Freaks, but because it had weird hybrid interlacing, it came out looking like shit. I ended up using GK and tweaking the avisynth script which worked great! I can't really judge AutoGK by that one though because it was a pain in the ass. I'll try it again on one of my more "standard" rips.

GK is pretty easy once you get the hang of it, but it is kind of complicated if you don't know what you are looking at. The guide at doom9 is good, but not complete. Plus the guide shows you to set up XviD with B Frames which caused some weird problems.

That's an oxymoron. A pro would of course alter the settings to suit the rip ;)

All i've ever used was gknot for dvdrips, never had a problem with it.

A buffer is a buffer. It means its loading stuff into memory and not streaming straight to hard drive. You got a cdwriter? Exactly the same thing. Only difference is that the buffer isn't important in this situation. If your ripping speed is slow, your probably using the IDE channel too much (emule running or something)

As for the .bat file, never heard of it. From a fresh install it must already be there. I installed gknot and the gknot pack from doom9

Now i do pretty much what addix does, use gknot and tweak the avisynth when needed. I use gknot for TV-rips too.

shamelessly copy and pasted from a msg that a guy at fileheaven sent me when i asked how to make a sample :D

To make a sample you use a programme called Nandub....you can get it from Doom9.

Open Nandub....

File>Open Video File....>[select the film you want to take a sample from]

Video>Direct Stream Copy
Audio>Direct Stream Copy

Audio>Avi Audio

Move the slider near the bottom of the Nandub GUI to the desired start point of your sample....and press [Home] on your keyboard. Then move the slider to the desired end point of your sample and press [End] on your keyboard.

Press [F7] and input the Target file filename, then click [Save]

A few seconds and youll have your sample....

thanks to ParanoidAndroid@FH

and it is that easy :o i've done it a few times on my latest rips and roughly about 90secs of avi sample is about one chunk on the ed2k network :D

thank you very much. that was easy! Didn't get no 90 sec though.

ed2k: sample.avi  [8.86 Mb] [Stats]

Please download this and comment. If everything is a-ok then I'll release it first thing.

Extra points if you can guess what flick it is.. =)

PS: I tried to select a piece of the flick with a little action.. figured it was best to see the quality of the rip with a little movement in the picture..?

trying to find you as the source for it atm but no luck...might be some time :wacky: also i noticed that your Identification is Invalid in my friends list not sure if it is in anyone elses? :?

maybe change the name of it away from "sample" as doing a search internally in emule there's like a billion results...use another name something more unique and it may come as a source easier :D

[EDIT]

ok found a source for it now.... :o {HHAH}Elvis Presley is alive :wacky:

Oh yeah, one more thing about the original topic. I don't use that Robot 4 Rip (or whatever the hell it's called) program that came with GKnot. I tried it and didn't like it so I just use DVD Decrytper to rip the movie and then do the DVD2AVI step manually. I like to be able to inspect the movie myself in DVD2AVI so I can see if it needs deinterlacing etc (contrary to R4R's belief, Forced Film is not always the way to go).

Yeah, I do too, I've never used Robot4rip. Never needed to, DVD2AVI works fine for me.
