i sometimes get the problem of not being able to delete the avi's just after i've burn't them with nero, but generally after a few mins of messing about and burning another file they do delete in the end .....but that is ONLY on my PC that runs with XP ....other PC's that i burn with NEVER has this trouble so i'm guessing you have XP installed?

remove the following registry key:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
If you're running SP1 then that key may not exist in which case in:-
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
Delete "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
It's due to the .avi property handler not releasing the file because the index is corrupt and it rebuilds it, which takes AGES, during which you can't move / delete the file.
There ya go, good luck, that should help.

i have a small .inf file you simply install and fixes the whole issue in XP in a simple click. (if you arent very secure in digging in the registry yourself)

does that registry fix work good?
i have the same problem.
i think some media players dont close a file when they exit, so windows thinks the file is in use even after the program is closed. my half assed quik fix is to rename the file, then move it. i also started making all video files read-only.

Eh, before I found this fix, I had another way to get around it. If it couldn't be deleted in explorer, I'd just open up Nero and delete it from within there which worked 80% of the times...

What I really like to know is how this happened all the sudden
My previous Xppro version (without SP1) didn't have this crap, and even this version just worked fine for at least a few months..

It started pretty suddenly for me too. I'm not sure why. Here's a decent explanation of it all though. Quote: | One of the video bugs in Windows XP is that you may not be able to delete or move a video avi file. Attempting to do so may result in an error message stating that the file is in use by another program and cannot be deleted. This usually happens with flawed or large avi files. The problem is that Windows XP reads the entire contents of the file into memory before even allowing you access to it (i.e. - when you click to highlight the file or right click to view the Properties). The bug responsible for this behavior is the file shmedia.dll which is in your System folder and called into play by the registry. Thus to fix this problem, all we need to do is delete the problem key so that shmedia.dll will no longer be used when you click a video file. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT and click Ok. Then make your way to this InProcServer32 key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SOFTWARE >Classes > CLSID > {87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}> InProcServer32
Right click the InProcServer32 key and choose Delete. And that's all there is to it. This will prevent Windows from loading shmedia.dll when you work with video files and thus you should no longer have problems deleting or moving any video files. Also if you have a video file you can't delete now, deleting this key will allow you to do so. If not, log out and log in again to delete the file.
If deleting the registry key makes you uncomfortable, you can export and save the reg key first. Alternately, you can rename the key by preceding the name with something like zzzz or 123.
Another method for deleting problem files (not just avi files) is by closing explorer and using the command line to delete the file. Here I'll give you a method that doesn't require you to enter any paths.
Find cmd.exe (it's in your Windows\System32 folder) and COPY it to the folder that contains your problem file. Double click the copied cmd.exe and leave the dos window open. Then click Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose Task Manager>Processes tab. Select Explorer and click End Process. Once ended, enter your delete command in the open dos box: del mymovie.avi (where "mymovie" is the name of your avi file) Press Enter. Then press Ctrl Alt Del again to get to the Task Manager>Processes tab. Click File>New Task. Enter EXPLORER.EXE and click Ok to get Windows back to normal.
The file should now be gone.

You aren't kidding when you say ages. I had one file that I tried for over a month to delete and I got the same message. Actually, I never was able to delete it until after I did the registry fix.

Primitive OS. With decent ones you can move/delete files while other programs have it open without any problems. I'd propose a good one starting with an 'L' in its name

Why hasn't anyone mentioned using the old dos shell to move/delete files?
It's pretty simple:
copy C:\file.* C:\folder\file.*
del C:\file.*
Of course, "file" is the name of your file and the asterisk is a wildcard for what would be the extention of the file.
I am unsure if this works in XP, I use Redhat/Win9x

This problem just seems to appear after a while for some ppl. I once had a system that was running fine, no new software added or updates applied for over 2 months as it was not connected to the net, and it just started.
