I am getting pissed off with Sygate and AVG 6, they need to be re-installed every few weeks to keep running right, so i would like advice on a new firewall and anti-virus package. I have a copy of norton internet security 2004 lying around that I found, that OK or would you guys recommend anything else?

Various problems, shit I have always had nothing new. AVG just seems to die after a while, whilest sygate is just temperemental ATM.

The other half is that I fancy a change LOL Been using these 2 for several years now.

i use NOD32 like antivirus - in most tests it's best atm
and firewall - Look'n'Stop. very good one. but has no "learning" mode.
so might be a bit hard. but really good, great firewall + eats only 2Mb

Kerio was very good whilst i used a software firewall. Hardware firewall/router wins hands down though.

I then filter ips with the IPfilter.dat :)

The only real bad things I heard about norton stuff is it can be a resource hog, but for me that aint an issue. Never liked kerio tho.

Kerio 4.x.x has SERIOUS problems...
i still can not get it working properly on my work machine.
Look'n'Stop works like a charm.

Back away from Norton 2004, now if something is evil than Norton 2004 would be it. It's causing many for lot of people lately, at least that's what I read on several fora.

A hardware firewall is good for controlling the incoming traffic, for controlling going out you would need a personal firewall like Sygate or Kerio. Zonealarm can cause problems in combination with eMule. As for Anti virus I would advice Mcafee or Kaspersky, but that's my personal preference..

2.15 is great thing. just almost perfect
but 4.x.x supposed to be also advertise cutter etc.
if 2.15 had it - that would be N1

but well, Look'n'Stop is a bit better.
like example u can restrict not only all ICMP packets but just definite type or even flag of that type etc/ and it's sumting that close to *nix firewalls, i like it..
imho.

never used Look'n'Stop... well never heard of it
I was just pointing out to avoid the pay versions of kerio, but i guess you knew that (better to be told another time than not at all is my moto in the help section :) )

I would recommend a hardware firewall over a software solution regardless, of course if a nix box is soft modded to act as a firewall, it for all intense and purposes is a hardware firewall.

I was considering using a nix box as a router.

yeah i knew. i checked all 4.x.x and...
very very bad.
as far as i knew 2.15 was made on the base of ideas of peoples who worked that time in Kerio. Now they r not in Kerio... so current developers... well, not so good.

yep, hardware firewall is the best solution.
i dunno, i never had DSL, but as i heard/know there is always router with DSL?
so it's "firewall". or am i wrong?

All sorted now, I found the newest version of Sygate Pro, I was using an older version LOL and I also upgraded to AVG 7, yet another soft I found. These peeps should not leave stuff lying around LOL I had to remove every trace of Sygate from the registry tho, it was leaving shit behind that was messing things up.

AVG and Kerio are the ones i normally recommend. Not sure on the firewall front anymore, but AVG is the best period.

AVG is the best virusscanner? If you look at the following test, you'll see it's nowhere near the best... :(

Quote:
4-12 May 2003

*
The test was made on 04-12 May 2003, using Windows 98SE on a CELERON 1100 Mhz, 384MB SDRAM.
*
All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc.
*
The 50795 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, RAV and McAfee antivirus programs. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus programs detected it as a new virus.
*
ALL virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept were the ones that were packed using external-dos-packers (that means not winzip, winrar, winace etc).
*
The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program (Renexts) and were unique, according to checksum32 filesize.
*
All "fake" virus samples were removed, as well as "garbage" files.
*
The programs AVK , PER and MKS were not tested because there was no english demo version available.
*
The programs BOClean , VET and Freedom were not tested because there was no demo version available.
* The program InVircible did not include a "typical" scanner-function and could not be tested.
*
The programs MR2S and VirusNet are no longer supported.
*
The program V-Catch checks only mail accounts and could not be tested.

The following file types were used.

ANS, ASM, BAT, ΒΙΝ, CHM, CLA, CLS, COM, CSC, DAT, DOC, ELF, EXE, HLP, HTM, INI, JS, MDB, MSG, PHP, PIF, PL, PPT, REG, SCR, SH, SHS, SMM, SYS, TD0, TPU, VBS, WBT, XLS, XML.

The virus samples were divided into these categories, according to the type of the virus :

*
File = BeOS, FreeBSD, Linux, Palm, OS2, Unix, BinaryImage, BAS viruses.
*
MS-DOS = MS-DOS and HLL*. viruses.
*
Windows = Win.*.* viruses.
*
Macro = Macro and Formula viruses.
*
Malware = DoS, Constructors, Exploit, Flooders, Hoax, Jokes, Nukers, Sniffers, Spoofers, Virus Construction Tools, Virus Tools, Corrupted, Droppers, Intended, PolyEngines.
*
Script = BAT, Corel, HTML, Java, Scripts, VBS, WBS, Worms, PHP, Perl viruses.
*
Trojans-Backdoors = Trojan and Backdoor viruses.

AVG has never let me down, even with viruses other programs could not find. But I've heard many good thing about Kapersky.

I am still using the old Kerio and IMO it's the best firewall I've ever tried - and I've tried many.

The problem with that list is that they don't take into account the drain on the system norton, pc-cillian etc. The ram usage is significantly higher.

AVG has caught and cleaned everything, and with the added bonus its very easy on the system, its still the best av software out there.

/me is going to look at AVK though, not tried that.
