Ok here it goes, My 120 gig harddrive recently crashed, and i am still trying to find proper recovering software,, still didnt find anything, windows doesnt start if i connect that faulty hardrive as a secondary. So only option is to find software that can read directly from harddrive without loading any prior system. Till none i couldnt find one, when i recover hopefully some data i will replace it with new one from Maxtor. Das experiment i have on CD, and i will put it on.

PS. Anybody knows good HD recovery program that doesnt need operating system to run ?

I only know these programs for data recovery

* Easy Recovery en Lost & Found
* R-Studio
* GetDataBack

Or google for "Data recovery", "Data recovery freeware" something like that.

Good luck :wacky:

Btw, can't you claim warranty?

What type of error you getting? I have a bad block but that only caused windows to freeze when I tried to access. Who's the make, maxtor have diagnostic tools on their website, will tell you what the problem is.

If you have XP, load up, second button on my computer>manage>System Tools>Event Viewer>system> look for red X and yellow ! incidents and read what the problem was.

ie.

Code:
11/02/2004   06:49:46 PM dmio    Warning None    35  N/A ANON    dmio: Disk Harddisk0 block 6291975 (mountpoint F:): Uncorrectable read error
11/02/2004  06:49:46 PM dmio    Information None    29  N/A ANON    dmio: Harddisk0 read error at block 6291976: status 0xc000009c
11/02/2004    06:49:46 PM Disk    Error   None    7   N/A ANON    The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

Gives a lot of information on exactly what the problem is. A low level format may fix mine. If not it needs to be replaced.

HDD Regenerator can remagnitise your disk's surface ie fix bad blocks to salvage stuff, Jufsoft BadCopy can copy files from bad drives, Partition Magic can flag bad blocks and run bootup scanners.

HDD Regenerator and Jufsoft BadCopy runs from bootdisk ? I ran that maxtor tool, it gave me error code and said to contact maxtor with it. Windows XP doesnt start if harddrive is conected as secondary and primary, i can use only boot disks,

Tx for info spud :)

okay, did it crash and you had to reset? Powercut? etc.

If so, then it maybe fixable with a soft format. My advice would be to get your maxtor error code, model, serial and firmware and contact maxtor. They will tell you what the problem is and/if your drive needs replacing. They said error codes with S57 or S50 at the end can often be fixed by a soft format with the power max utility, otherwise they need replacing :(

HDD Regenerator fixes bad blocks but is slow as hell. Runs from a boot disk. You'll need to track down a crack/cracked release of that as the trial only fixes the first bad block. Jufsof BadCopy is windows only and is basically an explorer. Select what you want to salvage. It attempts to regenerate the file then you export it to another drive.

I am still able to use my hard drive probably because its SATA, rather than sitting on a main ATA channel.

*split*

This banter is better rather than a release thread methinks. Funny that I got bad blocks on my hdd in the same week :cry:

BadCopy claims to do the trick (it kind of buffers, then writes), but won't help Domo if he can't get into windows. :(

Got into widows with corrupted harddrive, its really slow and system is hanging, anyways i fixed first 7 bad blocks of that HD with HDD regenerator, than I had to cancel regenreation or wait for a day at least. After i restarted normally and got into windows again,.. Is there bad block fixer that runs in windows ?and faster than HDD regenerator ? by the way that program is great !!!
