I'm trying to fix my mom's computer and she keeps getting this weird error first her screen goes blue and it says the following
An exception 0E occured at 0028:C0012D2C in VxD---. This was called from 0028:C001D218 in VxD---. It may be possible to continue normally.
Press any key to attempt to continue.
Press control alt delete to restart your computer. You will lose any unsaved information in all applications.
But the only way to exit that screen is a hard boot and she's having to restore her desktop frequently as well.
her system is
Authentic AMD
AMD Athlon (tm)Processor
256.0mb Ram
Should I just reformat it or does anyone know what we could try ?
Thx

If there was any cure for bluescreens, they wouln't be a problem anymore. Unfortunately, it can have various reasons, and usually you aren't able to tell what exactly is happening. Those errors will appear always, no matter how clean your system is, but hdd format/system reinstallation can decrease the frequency.

You can also try to change the system to 2000/XP, they are more stable. I've nearly forgotten what a BSOD looks like.

Hey Kat, it was a joke referring to the leaked windows sources ;-)

But even with the source, there is nothing you can do if the error happens regularly. Sorry. :?

You can start installing XP now, @Kat, because I can tell you no one knows what these errors mean, not even Bill and his lackeys. Like the information "An exception 0E occured at 0028:C0012D2C in VxD---. This was called from 0028:C001D218 in VxD" could tell you something. Except for obvious cases, when BSOD starts appearing regularly after you've installed some new software/changed hardware/deleted some important system files (), there is no way to find the reason or prevent it.

No no, you should format the disk onto which you want to install the OS.

There's nothing strange in the fact she's never formatted the other hdd, they are usually formatted (ready to use) when you buy them. So if it's working there's no need to format it.

Also, you don't have to format both disks, only the one you want your system to be installed to. I usually boot my computer from a floppy and then use the regular format c: DOS command, making sure C: is the volume I want formatted.

I have only ever had one period of BSOD on my XP system, and that was elf induced, I think, when I was really into tweaking. Since I settled down and no longer dig too deep I have not seen one for over a year.

Had BSOD (you have to turn it on in options, otherwise your computer reboots) with XP across various machines with:
Acatel Modem (prior to xp official launch)
Easy Cd (prior to xp official launch)
Bad HDD (installation, actually a Black screen :o )
Bad Graphics Card (freezing on another sys)
Bad/instable Drivers (hardware not supported)

However, that is across many machines. XP is more stable than 98, which, as an active and knowledgable user, f*cked up on a quadruple-daily routine (seriously, ultra-tweaking )

That's dangerous, and i know

If your C: partition is ntfs or something else except fat16/32, dos ignores it and labels the first readable partition as c:

Did this mistake once, my C: was ntfs and D: fat32.. "Format C:" actually formatted my second partition and i lost everything..
