I think a couple of people here have a Yamada, so I'd like to ask a question.

When I watch AVIs on my WS TV using the TV-out on my PC, I can resize the image to 4:3 and use the widescreen mode on my TV to watch it anamorphically (if it is a WS rip).

How does the Yamada (and also any other like it) handle this? Would I have to use the zoom to fill the TV screen, and lower the resolution in the process?

not entirely sure but try pressing the "set up" button on the remote and then go to the preferences option "tv display" somehwere there you can play around with the screensize...i have mine set to "wide" but there are 2 other options, possibly they can change AR format? failing that go over to the Yamada forum and ask the Q there

Thanks for the reply.

I scoured the board but couldn't find a definite answer, so I posted my question there.

I haven't actually got a Yamada, but I'll buy one if it'll display AVIs anamorphically. Fingers crossed... :?

Also, I've just noticed that my new avatar bears some resemblance to yours. Purely unintentional!

DJ Benson should be able to sort you out with a definate reply,he's pretty hot on the tech side of the Yamada's :D also not sure if you know but there is a newer model out now,the DVX6600, the forum is plastered with the tech stuff all about it if you are thinking about purchasing either the dvx6100 or dvx6600....i know one thing...i'm glad i bought mine :beerchug:

and your avatar looks like the "before" in a "before and after" or could it be vice-versa :wacky:

I've stubled upon a problem with my yamada dvx 6000 it does not play all avi's

If an avi's uses the quarterpixel tecnique it will not play because this is a not supported format i will get the messege codec not supported (q pel)

have you guys any experience with this sort of problem??

cheers,

yes...it's a known fact that the yamada's don't support that and if i remember correctly b frames or something like that....BUT the new model 6600 apparently is supposed to handle it...maybe we will get a firmware upadte to resolve this problem and the never ending subtitle problem

easiest thing to do with those .avi's that have q-pel or b frames is to re encode it with virtual dub :D

Yeah..... but reencoding is always a lot of work :) ofcourse it's a good way to get the movies you really want, but if you ask me they should come up with an firmware update which allows us to play these kinds of standards

And what is the problem you have with the subtitles, mine are yellow without any outline whick is perfect NOT !! :argue: i didn't believe my eyes when i saw the yellow fuckers hhahaha

well let's hope for an solution for these probs would be great if they'll fix these little thingies it would contribute even more madness to my movie collection

As for the 6600, i just purchased the 6000 a couple of months ago.
I'll stuck to this one for the time beiing

cheers

reencoding isn't too much work :P but definately think they should update the firmware for the older 6000/6100 soon as last one was in december but apparently umax are more interested about pushing the 6600 so firmwares are being delayed

isn't that enough problem? no but sometimes the subtitle filename cannot be longer than 11 letters so if files are already burn't you have to reburn and drop filenames down to 11,another thing that should have been put right with a firmware release

yeah i only recently got my 6100 and am grudged to pay another 70 quid for the next model when there was no notice by umax that the dvx 6600 was getting a release :matrix:

well personally i'd buy one but it is a hard choice between the 6100 and the 6600 as both still have some flaws they need sorting out and both are good and bad in different areas :wacky: ... but ultimately i reckon the 6600 is gonna get a firmware update before the 6100 as it's umax's shiny new player so us 6100 users will have to wait until a later date to resolve some annoying problems

@ Bassline

IMHO it is too much work to reencode :) im a lazy person i want all those evil movies to play on my standalone dvd player without any extra work

As for the 11 character thingie, never run into that problem......... but you have a point there

But I still love my little Yamada player

If it plays widescreen rips anamorphically on a widescreen TV set then that's great, otherwise I'll wait for one that does.

Well, in hindsight I'd wished I'd waited and got the 6600. However, in saying that my 6100 has played over 90% of the Divx/Xvid files thrown at it. If they don't work I just re-encode to Divx 5.11 and cbr audio with VirtualdubMod. And I've left my PC hooked to my TV anyway - just for emergencies

The 6100 has issues with qpel and gmc, but that's all as far as I can see and there aren't many of those about. In fact personally I see no improvement in quality using these settings anyway.

My only real gripe with the 6100 is the quality of 'real' DVD's are not as good as my Sony - but I've left that hooked up too, along with a PS2 for those emergencies

I'll really have no clue if it does that.... you should check some reviews if it is available in UK then there are reviews floating around somewhere on the web

I've looked through many reviews and posted my question on various boards, to no avail. So many people have one but no-one knows! :?
