Its a mpeg4 container, just like AVI or OGM (AVI being m$s mpeg4 container, OGM being ogg media's mpeg4 container). According to that site, MKV is the shit, lots of subs a junk contained in one file.

Try searching on FH, they have a nice collection of links to matroska filters and info on this format.

No completely true, MKV was to be found better then OGM. Haven't checked out the latest details lately but I don't think MKV is shit. It is the best thing so far to completely compress a DVD to one CDR with great quality and all the extra's (not to mention in one file).
