When I make a dvdr with avis on it for storage there is always a largish space of wast at the end of the disk...

700meg files can fit 6 movies on dvd-r with 500ish free space.

What do you guys think about encoding files a little larger so you can cleanly fit 6 movies on a dvd? And what size would you need to encode 2?

drawback they not fit on cdr. (I hear people still use them)

hhmmmmmm, it is a discussion looming, but not yet I beleive.

We are getting faster speeds and larger storage devices but I think sticking to the 700MB standard should still be the norm for a while.

As it produces quality rips at a fraction of the size of the source!

But will definetly in the future be an issue!

Hmm, I think the only solution would be to make SMALLER files, so that you can fit 7 onto a DVDr, but it's also possible to burn them on CDs. 700 MB is and will remain a standard as this is the capacity of a normal blank CD, and not everyone has a DVD burner.

On the other hand, this would be a waste of space for CD users...

As you can see, there is no satisfying solution to this problem, although I know the pain of leaving so much empty space on a disk. I tried to fill it up with all sorts of rubbish, animations, short documentaries, undersized rips etc, but soon ran out of them.

Thats is what I am doing. ; )

What about making 2cd rips of movies... instead of making 2 700 meg files you make some sort of other sied rip that can fit on a cdr, yet make a ncie clean fit to dvdr?

I do not think the downlaod is a prob with people downloading 2cd 700 megs rips and complete dvd-r rips all the time already.

Yes, yes, but can you actually propose any size that would be ok both for CD- and DVD-users?

i think leaving it at 700mb is the best thing for now :)...even though i have just acquired a DVD burner :P....i have a huge disliking for 2 cd releases unless the movie is obviously in need of it because of the length of the movie, i mean i've seen 2 cd AC3 rips of 90 minute movies that have no action in em and really have no need for the extra bitrate and audio, if ya gonna do a 2cd'er for a movie like that ya might aswell go the whole hog and make a DVDr IMO :D

ahem, the extra space is hinting at ripping the extras. Especially documentries and audio commentries.

I mean commentries don't even have to be muxed :)

I'm using Esperanza DVD-R's, they cost ~0.7 Euro. That's the cheapest I've found. Still, my heart aches when I lose half a gigabyte with every disc.

Im using Platinum DVD-R's right now and they cost me like 35 euro for 25 which is expensive.

Can't we set up a topic where we post where we could get the dvd's the most cheap??

My local PC shop sells them dirt cheap.
25 for ?6.50

Or if you wanna splash out for branded 4x style ones then ?7.70 for 25

They even have a dual layer DVDR drive for ?159.99, but they got no dual layer discs yet

To be honest coming from 1 avi a cdr to 6 on a dvdr I don't mind a bit a wasted space :D
