I've been burning most of my .avi movie files to CD-Rs, and then when I need to watch them later, I pop the disc in and copy it back, delete when done. Recently I've run into a few that are problematic. I'll put in the disc, and the CD-Rom drive absolutely refuses to read it. The CD-Rom drive light will flash for a while on and off, and then just stop. I try to open it manually through My Computer and the My Computer screen locks up.

What I've been doing is this.

1) Put in a blank CD.
2) A d: window drive pops in Windows XP. I copy the file into there and write the CD.

I've heard about using Nero for this, but I tried it, and the files turned out to be read-only and I couldn't play them... what the fuck's going on?

(its built by the incompetants that make EasyCDcreator (aka glitchyCDcreator). Always use a competant burner, nero is just about market leader for a reason.

As for your current cds, using easycdcreator/XP inbuilt i'd say there's a high chance of the cds being CRCd to frell ie. coasters


As for the "read-only", erm... all cds are readonly. But if your referring to the file access on your hdd, you click second button>properties>uncheck read-only. what's the problem? Or am i misunderstanding you?

Crap, what happened was I'd double click it and I'd get some error message... looks like I'll have to re-dl Nero and get these files back. So far I've been catching up on everything I've burned and putting the info into EMM (got the hang of it ), and reading the info on all of them. Of about 150, 4 are blank... what isn't helping is one was a rare Video Nasty (Forest Of Fear), and one was Street Trash, which I'd been aching to watching all fucking day, and it HAD to be one of the four that didn't work. I just hope Forest Of Fear has sources now, goddamn piece of shit Windows is...

I'm not sure what kind of error it is. It simply refuses to read the disk. It won't even acknowledge the name of it. I managed to open the d: drive folder, and it said 0 bytes free, 0 bytes used...

If you're going to be using Nero...

Burn two or three discs then use:

Nero Toolkit--> Nero CD-DVD Speed--> Extra--> CD Quality Test

to test the disc for errors. If you get loads of C1 and C2 errors, check your settings. Usually just kill any program that may be affecting Nero, or lower your speed. Another thing is to disable any anti-virus program you may have running while you burn. A rare few C1 errors aren't too much to worry about, but enough C2's and the disc will do exactly what you described above... slow your drive down to a crawl as it tries to read the disc, then just fail.

Okay, I've got Nero... what do I use? Backup files?

All depends - do you want a real for real VCD or just an AVI on a CD?

For plain ole data just select CD-ROM ISO (note I don't use the wizzard - I like total control) - for a VCD select VCD or if you have higher quality MPEG2 data SVCD and drag the AVI - Nero will convert it if you have the propper codec installed, but you're better off not converting it.

Don't use the wizard, it's crap.

The interface is pretty straightforward, you'll get used to it.

I had a problem like you but with DVD's. Every data or movie DVD i would burn with Nero (newest version) would burn a ok ... but when inserted back in the drive the computer would not read it.

I never had this problem before and It was driving me nuts!
I had the mule off and anything that would bother with the burn but still these strange coasters.

I thought It was the media and so I did some recearch and found out things about the brands and the good and the bad type ..blah blah blah

returned my spindle and got a new fresh one to find that these discs worked link a charm! YAY but then,,
By my 3rd burn again the same shit. tried another brand and the same crapa ta ta..

It turns out that it was the ABC Torrent client hiding in the background!
I would shut it off before the burning but It would still remain in the background running! :-o
Shut it off via task manager or rebooting.

The good discs i had made were when I had a fresh booted computer (DUH) without ABC on before the sessions.
Emule seems fine when burning and i never had a problem.


Well I haven't had another bad disc ...since
