I'm thinking of building a 64-bit PC.

Simple question, what's the version of Windows that would be best to use on a 64-Bit machine?

It's called Lunix. ;) Seriously, MS has a 64-bit version of Windows (XP?) available as a free download and some of the hardware is even supported but they're still far, far away from a completed product.

So no point in building a 64-bit machine then? :?

I considered Linux, but to be honest I don't want to go through the learning curve for another OS and I'm not sure if Gordian Knot runs on Linux does it?

Hey DJ, i am building myself a new PC, but the total lack of 64bit apps, plus the currently laughable condition of windows 64, combined with the increased price has put me off. Maybe in 2 years time I will build one.

the only hting that stopped me using Linux was it is not as user friendly as Windows, and I am the only techno-savvy person ATM in this household.

I could help (though I once failed miserably. Hi Tak ;-))

You can be sure: It does not. But you can install Windoze in vmware. A 64bit machine might be fast enough. :-)

So could I run 32 bit Win2K or XP Pro on a 64 bit mahine in anticipation of a 64 bit OS becoming available?

Hey wargand, you did not fail me mate, I just got a constant earbashing form the family about Linux not being easy to use, and I lacked the space for a dual boot system.

However, when my new system is built that will be solely for me, this current PC will be put on a wireless network for the rest of the family to use, so I might set up a dual boot system and have another go with Linux.

The problem was that we were all used to windows, and anything slightly different required learning, and kids hate that LOL

I suppose so. It should be possible if there is a vmware version, which runs under 64bit Linux. I personally run from time to time Windoze 2000 under vmware under Linux, e.g. when I get CloneCD images. It is not perfect, but good enough for me. However, I probably would not use it to play Doom 3.

@Tak: thanks :-)

What I meant was, could I install just Win2k/XP (i.e no linux) and have it as the OS until a 64bit one is released?

If not, what exactly is the point of 64bit hardware being available?

64bit hardware gives only, I believe, a small speed advantage when running 32bit apps. However, apps written for 64bit processing will run at a seriously increased speed. Basically I am gonna wait until 64 bit apps are more commonplace before I invest in the technology, the same way I waited until dual layer burners were available for dvd burning.

@Wargand, just telling it how it is mate. You were, and prolly will be at a leter date, a huge help for me.
