Just finished my first ever rip (using autogk) and wanted to check with some more experienced rippers before I post it.
The image quality on the dvd wasn't that great to start with and to me it looks fine in comparison.

Name.........: Dark.Heritage.[1989].DVDrip.Dia.Xvid.avi
Filesize.....: 700 MB (or 717,158 KB or 734,369,792 bytes)
Runtime......: 01:22:52 (124,290 fr)
FPS..........: 25.000
Frame Size...: 512x384 (1.33:1) [=4:3]
Video Codec..: XviD
Video Bitrate: 985 kb/s
Audio Codec..: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc
Audio Bitrate: 192 kb/s (96/ch, stereo) CBR

Image

Does that look ok, or should I make some changes?
and if so, what?
(the line down the left side of the pic is there on the source)

In my opinion AC3 sound for a cheap 80s horror is unnecessary, 128k MP3 should be more than enough.

Everything else looks fine though, although I'm not an expert on the finer points of a rip.

I thought about using mp3 instead, but decided to give ac3 a go due to the short run time, fairly poor original picture and the fact the film is very dark (night( almost all the way through.
Figured it wouldn't impact the pic quality too much. I can easily try an mp3 version too though and see how that works out.

Thanks

Dr. DivX 1.05 with DivX Pro 5.1.1 works excellent.
Also DivX Video Duplicator 2 (french software).
The audio: mp3/96 kHz/joint stereo (only 128/160 for concerts).

My first rip was really really bad.... hehehe.

What's that blue line at the left of the screen? Is it there during the whole movie?

And what was the original resolution of the dvd? You could possibly use a higher resolution, since the film is so short anyway.

But I'm in no way any expert. Just done 8 or so rips myself.... =)

But I really like that ed2k: FairUse.0.44.multilanguage.rar  [3.73 Mb] [Stats] program. Amoung other things, it gives you a selection of good proposed resolutions to choose from, before ripping starts. It's extremley easy to use, just like AutoGk, but gives you just a tiny bit more control, without being all messy like regular GK.

128k mp3 is way to shallow IMO. The sound is so flat and dead, removing all the ambient atmosphere.

But if you use mp3, you should remeber to use VBR, thus saving alot of space on all the 'blank' spaces where there are no sounds at all.

Yup, there on the dvd all the way through.

Original resolution was 700 something *something, it encoded at about 72% if I remember correctly.

I'll give fairuse a go and see what that does though, thanks :D

You should crop that blue crap off (gknot proper is best for this), looks like a VHS scan line and if its always there you should probably let it go. If it comes and go leave it. Also as said, AC3 is a poor idea for this movie, a video bitrate and/or resolution increase would be much more preferable.

Since you have a 512x res and a 900+ bitrate, its a decent enough rip spec, but looking at the image it looks a bit unclear so the extra res and/or bitrate will do it a world of good :)

Cheers Spud :D

Currently trying other methods to try and improve it, and I'll crop that line off before I release it (it stays all the way through unfortunately).
As for the image quality, I'm not sure it'll improve much even with a higher res, it wasn't that great on the dvd.
I assume the film was shot on video originally, it's certainly a very low budget affair....I'd estimate ?50 tops
