You don't like my answer? Sorry, more I cannot deliver when you don't write, which operating system you use. ;-)
The times where there was only windows are over.

With Linux I would use avidemux or mencoder to cut or reencode a film.

eh,
2 easiest(relatively) that i frequently use-
Virtual Dub
Nanodub
both are available at http://www.doom9.net

is the file u want to shorten .avi,.mpeg.mpg, ?

i guess i'd need to know a little more to walk you thru it, i cant think of anyway to do it in less then 20 words, and there is a lot of 'if its..'.

u can also use winzip, winrar, winace, any of the archiving utilities with either compression or a splitting function.

hehe,forgot about this.
ok.
the extention of the file, is it an .avi?

if u message me in mule, i can walk you thru it.
It probably only take a minute.

ah, i guess i will type this up, too.

first thing is if its a dvd-rip, then it probably has vbr (Variable bit rate) mp3 encoding. You DO NOT open the file in virtualdub. Use nanodub or virtualdub mod.
easiest way(that i know of), and it depends on how much you want to cut. this assumes its not a whole lot, probably less than 5-10mb of a 700mb file

1.open nanodub
2. go to (at the top) file-open video file
3. select the file you want. If its an avi file, it should load automatically. If its mpeg or a corrupted avi, it needs to rebuild or parse. This can take a while.
when its an avi file-
4. go to video-direct stream copy(this turns off processing it).
5. go to audio-direct stream copy. this is set as default.
6. now we set the portions to get rid of. one way is to ditch the credits.
6-1. hit the button allong the bottom to go to the end of the movie. its the sixth one from the left.

6-2. now hit the last button, 13th from the left, looks like a -](sort of). this sets the end frame for the section your taking out.
6-3. now back up 1 frame. *
6-4. now hit the back 1 keyframe button. this looks like a little key with an arrow. 8th button from the left.
6-5. hit the back keyframe button until the begining of the credits. the amount of frames between keyframes varies, so us your judgment on where the best place to start the cut is.
6-6. the 12th button from the left is for marking the begining of the edited section.
6-7. clicking the 12th button, you should see a sliver of dark grey line, across the timeline at the bottom. go to the top, hit 'edit', then select 'delete frames'(the option is near the bottom of the selections).
6-8. go to 'file'-'save as avi'- then name it. This should process quickly(like a minute.)

Re-encoding audio at a lower bit rate-

if you have no credits, or need them, u can try-

open the file in nanodub.
set video to 'direct stream copy'
set audio to 'full processing'
go to audio- compression
-new screen should show
--select 'no compression PCM'
--hit ok

then 'file'-'save as avi'
and name the file.

when thats done, open the file in nanodub.
go to audio-compression-
- now select a setting that was lower than what it previously was. the lowest i use is mp3 56k/sec mono.

usually dvd rips are 128k/sec mp3, or AC-3. if its ac3 then converting to mp3 should shrink it considerably. 112k or 96k mp3 should shrink a few mb's.

(making sure video is set to 'direct stream copy'!!)
got to file-save as avi- and name the movie.

that should do it.

thats a new one. does it freeze your whole computer, or is it just nanodub?
Ive had virtualdub get to 0.0 frames per second encoding, but that was problems with the video codec.

if its your computer that freezes, then i think (i'm no expert) you may have a bad area on your hard drive were that part of the file is stored, or the encoded file itself is so corrupted that it crashes/freezes.
if disc scan or defragging doesnt help, you can also try to clip that part out. I've done this in virtualdub with damaged cd's that had movies. It may take a few times to get the areas of the corruptions edged out, you may need a pencil to write down the were the frames go bad.

where you say

"when thats done, open the file in nanodub.
go to audio-compression- "

should audio be full processing there or direct stream

hey, is this the reason why so many films seams to have great quality, then only murky credits?

no, thats because of magnetism. yeah, magnatism.

audio compression- full processing mode(still)

you need to have loaded the uncompressed PCM audio version of the movie.

jon, i think there is a credits filter in gaurdian knot to encode the credits at a lower bit rate. I havent used it, as i dont rip to many dvds, and almost always cut them on my vhs captures.

hehe, 'day of the beast'
hahahHAHAHAHahahahAHAHAHA
i'm surprised this film isnt more popular.

Well would you Adam and Eve it, i defraged me system as you suggested and tryed again and it worked with no problem ( lesson here ,when you have used all your hard drive except 1.1gb then free 10 gb up, make sure you defrag it )

All bow your heads
You are indeed wise Monkey and i will bathe in your light and follow your teachings as you have shown that from disorder and chaos you can bring order and purity , from nothing you can produce something, and from too long a film you can bring it to a CD.
Let it be known that from this day forth the name of Monkey will be said with awe and hope

oh and cheers matey you know your stuff :)
