I downloaded a full dvd off of usenet and i ripped it last night but because of the length of the flick(I'm guessing) and me wanting to keep it at 700mb the bitrate was way too low. It's one hour and 43 minutes and the bitrate came out at 812. I also went with the usual 128 mpeg layer 3 for the audio. Now do i need to sacrifice some audio to get the bitrate up or do i need to change something in gnot? Here is some screens of how i did it...

I also de-interlaced the file but i noticed there's 2 options of de-interlacing and i went with Field Deinterlace instead of Field Deinterlace(no blend). What's the difference between them?

812 as a bitrate is OK yeah it could be higher but i've seen good rips with less to be honest,it all depends on the movie really......are there lots of high/fast action scenes or what?......one thing though...it says it's a 4:3 movie right?...but your AR is 1.90:1 a widescreen AR?......maybe a (4:3) AR of 512x384 or higher would be correct or maybe i'm talking bollocks :wacky:

Mine is kind of blocky or the one on the frontpage?

I guess i can't really up the bitrate any then without increasing the filesize unless i reduce the audio quality. I see also that that one on the frontpage is ripped in DivX 3 Low-Motion so i figured i'd download the full dvd and practice ripping it into XviD. First time i've done a full dvd so i wanted some tips and pointers mainly on how i made out.

Yes this is a widscreen presentation Bassline.

well, audio should be a max of 128kb/s VBR here, it doesn't say what setting its at.

Bitrate should be an absolute minimum of around 800kb/s mostly, but your going to get blockiness around here.

However, your resolution is your problem! Its way too high, see where its at 0.178, try and get it higher, you should aim for around 0.181+. Reduce the resolution to 512 or 544 and I think you'll get a much better result.

Finally the knowledge flows Spud :lol:

Is shows above that i used 128 vbr mp3 for the audio so i will try lowering the res to what you said and post back.

Don't go below 128 vbr.

Well i ripped it again using a resolution of 544x288 and left the audio as is and it still ended up at a bitrate of 812. I also used 0.216 bits/pixel. How can the bitrate remain unchanged?

bits/pixel is more important than bitrate, don't worry about it.

You may want to try 512 though ;)

528x288 or 512x272 should give you a nice AR :)

noooooooooooooooo! not 528, that isn't divisible by 32 is it? You shouldn't really do a horizontal res that isn't divisible by 32, not if you want full compatability.

512 or 544 only.

just for the record, the reason why 32 divisible res is needed is because it uses significantly less CPU power to decode so makes for a better rip :)

What deinterlace filter are you using? For PAL, this one is claimed to be best:
Quote:
SeparateFields()
Bob()
SelectEven()

I'm not sure what filter it is. Where do you look to find out? This one is NTSC so which one is best for that?

Ok. Here's the new rip using 512x272(.243bits/pixel,bitrate 812). I will post the old screenshots with the new ones to see if there's any noticable difference.
