I know this is kinda outa left field but I also know many of you are video format / conversion gurus...
I have been making a lot of video files recently for a web project I am involved with and have all the data as uncompressed AVI files... I need to try and get the file size down as small as possible and figured I would try to convert them into XviD
I have VirturaDUBmod but I can not seam to convert the files...
IN VDubMod I go to video and select full processinhg mode and then select Convert.
I scroll down the codec list and select XviD Leaving all as default and hit save and I get this error
"Statsfile not found"
Anyone have any ideas or mabey a diffrent program that I should use to convert to XviD?

Why convert them to Xvid?
Divx 5.2 is smaller, in my experience, and as long as you have the codec VDub will convert anything into it.
I'm a Divx person though. Xvid is...I don't know. Not me.

No, you don't need to pay anything.
Just download the DIVX codec (which you should have anyway) and open up VDub. It'll let you encode in DIVX.

I beg to differ, avoid divx, its just an inferior codec, never got better results with divx. If this is for a webproject too, this is a huge warning flag next to it too, (unless you use the stripped down version!) as its pay software, with adware in, which you should force your viewer to use (and can get you in deep shit if this project is legitmate). That said, xvid is just flat out a better codec, so all the spy ware doesn't matter (which can be blocked of course).
I would advice avoiding divx at all costs in all circumstances, unless theres no choice in the matter.
Have you tried RV10? Its realmedia codec, but is the best for extremely low bitrate (ie. webprojects) encodes. There's some very impressive RV9/10 rips out that have several audio streams for a long movie on 1cd, that still look decent. The problem is that it tends to blur regions slightly (ie. skin lacks very subtle changes in colour), and thusly why it is superior for animation (where you have solid colour regions). For web encodes, where bitrate is important, then its the winner hands down. I would point out that it requires the RV9/10 codec which isn't too popular of course.
Check out my thread here on my video capture. Its DV so its uncompressed AVIs I'm dealing with, and includes how I get the best results (avisynth, and gknot -> Xvid 1+).
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic. ... highlight=
Its not the most current method in that thread, but I can update if absolutely necessary. I think I probably posted elsewhere about it, maybe in the monster squad anyone interested or release threads.
BTW, you should uninstall xvid, then install gknot and gknot codec pack (then grab and install koepi's latest xvid build). That will sort out the stats spouge.

I don't know why exactly you say it's an inferior codec, but I do know that you don't have to download spyware crap with it.
You can just download the codec itself without any of the other jibba-jabba.
Oh...and I'm also partial to Divx because Divx with MP3 audio burned onto CD plays best on my Divx DVD-Player.
Whereas my standalone HATES Xvid, and the video and sountrack stop being aligned after about 15 minutes of play, and it starts to look like one of those old dubbed King Kong movies. "I am the King of Thebes" "No, you are not"...and then, 20 seconds later, you get...
So it is what it is, ya dig?

Try looking for a firmware patch for your standalone.I am with spud on this one. After all the movies I have done you notice now that most everything is in Xvid over the last year...just better quality in my view...the only time i use divx anymore is if it's a B&W picture like those dark shadows...xvid doesn't like black and white for some reason..it likes to make it's own colors

Not the pro version, which is the only one that comes ANYWHERE near Xvids quality. If you wish to use the pro-version you have to install it and then disable the spyware, or download rather dodgy cracked versions from the mule. Neither are favourable options just to get a codec that's worse anyway.
Your player probably can't handle b-frames or something, thats hardly a superior codecs fault more of the fault of an inferior player
Xvid is a far better codec than divx will ever be, except for some extreme circumstances. For a webproject, complete freeware is also a much better way to go, or if you are entering the realm of adware/payware, you want to use RV10 for the aformentioned reasons.

Tried it.
I'm running the latest firmware.

OK....I buy it.
But for $80 I can live with my standalone and my Free DIVX.
It's not like my Television is gonna show a big difference anyway, considering the fact that it's a 27" and not even a True Flat, let alone Plasma or HDTV or anything like that.
So...ya know how it goes.
Pragmatic solutions for the impoverished.

Thanks for the info but I am still not getting good results... camtasia encodes the 6:45m 800x600 video to about 15megs...
When ever I do any Xvid conversions the text in the scren capture becomes all crappy.... if I make it 100% legibal it seams to make 20meg files.. that can not be right eh? if a hour movie can fit in 700megs??
The files are in downloadable packages, they do not need to stream at all.. I tried RM and got small files but they had worse txt than the XviD encodes I did.

You'll need to do a lot of passes if you want to encode at a low bitrate. Your res is also too high and will probably make it blocky at a low bitrate.
if your using gknot, the slider should tell you this. If you don't know what I mean, look at the gknot guides about compressability tests.
~60% should be the aim I think, but thats just a guess
