OK...
Steam updated itself, and now I can't play HL2.

Any solutions?

That seems odd, really odd. I'm still able to play HL2 (legit) after all the updates so I can't comment, does it crash out or show a message? Have your restarted?

If your running a pirate version, then you need to wait for a cracked update from the cracking crews. You shouldn't let steam connect, period.

If its legit, I suggest downloading a pirate version and distrubuting to as many people as humanly possible. Valve, if preventing you from playing a legitimate installation, deserve no better.

I'll just re-install and prevent Steam from connecting.
Pricks. Fuck em.

It's weird, do you have a legit copy or trying to install some cracked version?

I have a legitimate backup of the legitimate CD that someone else legitimately bought and then ripped the data onto their computer in RAR form with a crack in it.

Does that bother anyone else? We are downloading files with CRACKS in them.

Umm, I'm not sure that polityk was implying you shouldn't use a pirate version, more trying to ascertain if that was WHY it would no longer work.

Steam is renowned for kicking non legit versions (and banning accounts), you need a new update by the sound of things, Takyon should know as he is running a copy too :)

Yes, exactly, thanks for clearing it up.

drpoopypantz, that's some strange reaction I must say. After all, this whole site is about exchanging links, why should I condemn your use of illegitimate copies?

I actually meant that reaction as a joke. I was just trying to make a segway into the crack thing. I do have an illegitimate copy of HL2 though, and I'm not really surprised that it's not working anymore.

I'll probably just buy it.

Anywho, another topic of possible interest. Do you know that Video Games cost more to make now than Movies do? Because you're not just filming existing reality when you make a Video Game. You're programming a reality, which takes a lot of time from expensive programmers, and then you have celebrity voiceovers and commercials and blah blah blah. Half Life 2 cost...I don't know how much, but I bet you it's over 80 million.

But why isn't it working? Does it mean I should install it offline next time? :?

I'm pretty sure if Steam can't access the net it won't let you play the game.

drpoopypants, if you do decide to buy it, make a NEW steam account for the purchase, if Valve tie any account to piracy, they'll disable it even if you bought the game on the acount(!)

To be honest, after completing HL2, and admining this site, Rome:Total War is getting a lot more attention for me than HL2 atm... just wait for the zombie mods to roll out though :)

I couldn't even finish HL1.
/kept saving over the save spots.

Was in that one room with the Reactor, and found my way inside it.

Couldn't go back without getting zapped by the puddle.
/And I blew up the bridge.

HOW DID YOU GET OUT OF THAT AREA?

Was the circular room, with the horivators and elevators.

The reator was on hte top of the map.

With wires or beams connected to it.

That's as far as I got.=(

/yet I didn;t kill the Octopus boss.=(
Just ran by.

you had to time the jumps.
only jump in the external horivator when the inner is coming from the other way, or else it goes under a region with low ceiling and you'd be pushed in the radioactive puddle. then do it another time with the innermost horivator and you're in the center of the reactor.
you had to push 2 buttons on the opposite sides of the wall to open the gates of the reactor.

no, you throw some granade in the pit so that it brings down the tentacles and doesnt nail you as you pass by.
