Quiet mic.

No, it aint the newest shitter from Disney, rather a problem infact.

I built a PC for my bro, but his mic is quiet as fuck, it is using the onbaord audio, tried various drivers, and we have eliminated the mic as a problem.

Would the best course of action be to just grab a new sound card? Just wanna make sure I aint missed anything before he has to purchase a new bit of kit.

Oh and yes, we have tried changing the volume settings etc LOL

So i'm guess he's getting music from the speakers, it's just his mic that isn't working? Is the mic a standard phono connection? What OS is it?
What is the motherboard make and model?

you've erm... turned the volume up in microsoft mixer and clicked "Microphone boost" right?

That's the extent of all I've ever needed to do to fix the quiet mic syndrome in the past. Both access via control panel.

He is running XP Pro SP2, mobo make etc I cannot remember, but we have tried the drivers that came with it and worked our way thru 3 updates, still no success, the mic does work on my system.

It just does not pick anything up properly, if you put it right to ya mouth, literally touching, and scream down it you can hear it at the other end, and from my system it works like usual.

@Spud, that is what I did, that is all I ever had to do to get a mic working LOL

He does get music, everything else is fine, just this crappy problem marring an otherwise excellent system.

Oh yeah BTW, it is just a standard connection.

I reckon I should just tell him to buy a new soundcard, he can grab an old crapper if need be, he only surfs the net and flirts with bints online.

There are so many variants of AC97 audio drivers that without the mobo make and model your just guessing, you appear to have found one that sorta works.

If he just talks to bints online, you could probly get a 16 bit card for about a fiver.
