Hi everyone!

As stated in the topic header I want to convert some mpeg2-material to Xvid. I've done some searching on Doom9 and VCdhelp but haven't found what I'm looking for:

Is there a way (preferably n00b-friendly) to do the conversion using Virtualdub(mod) and Tmpeg. I don't have much encoding experience but I'm a little familiar with those apps. That's the reason I would prefer to use those if possible.

Any help will be appreciated.

TIA, guys. :beerchug:

Its exactly like you would do a dvdrip. I'd strongly suggest using gknot since most people that do things manually tend to make the same screwups (ie. bad deinterlacing, bad cropping, bad resolution, bad AR, etc.). Gknot is a frontend for virtualdubmod that prevents these f*ckups.

But its exactly the same, i don't see what the problem is. just open the mpeg2 mpg file as you would any other and then do your filtering and encode... there's nothing else you need to do. If for whatever reason your mpeg2 doesn't open in virtualdubmod, which it does, then you need to use dgindex and an avisynth file.

With gknot, just do exactly as you would do with a set of vob files. That is, in DGIndex, go file>open and select your mpg file instead of a set of vobs, and then carry on as if its a DVDrip (following the DVDrip guide @ doom9 if you have to but its exactly the same).

That is then load the d2v project in gknot, the window will pop up with the preview, set the format/filesize. Select the source details, crop, resize, then hit save and encode and do what you want with it.

Thanks Spud. :beerchug:

I've done a little trial and error with virtualdubmod in the meantime and also found some stuff on deinterlacing which has been very helpful. After encoding the file five times I'm pretty happy with the results but I'll give GK a try anyway.

So far, I've only worked with AutoGK and I was going to learn GK anyway. So maybe this is the right time and occasion. :-)

Cheers

saying learn kind of overstates how hard gknot is, its very simple. AutoGK i've never liked, pretty crappy actually :(

That's reassuring, thanks. :-)

I've done one rip using AutoGK and it looked very jerky so I've never used it again.
