Since moving house, I've had a problem with my modem (Alcatel Speedtouch USB on XP) going on to initializing whilst connected. It happens randomly during normal internet use, but will always do this within 1 minute of starting a torrent program (haven't tried eMule yet).

I've been thinking it is either the socket / wiring in the new house or my modem that is at fault, although the modem was always fine at my previous address.

I've re-installed the modem software so far with no luck, and was wondering if anyone knows how best to locate the fault? :)

what version software are you running i updated to a newer one and had some kind of problems so reverted back to this version number (201.2.0.0) maybe that might help?

in your taskbar there should be a small icon possibly 4 circles together in green/purple colour? double click on that and the diagnostics should appear then if it's the same as my set up click a green arrow pointing down and then goto version number ;)

I'm running 301.0.0.12 with Pipex absolutely fine.

This sounds more like a line problem though. Or maybe too many sockets (or too much cabling in the house, or not having filters on every socket). The length of phone line should be no longer than 30ft iirc from a master LJU phone socket (a master differing from a basic one by virtue of having a capcitor).

For dragdiag.exe it is 1.3.0, for the other entries it is V131.4R.

Strangely, when the icon goes yellow and to initializing, the light on the modem stays constant (no problems), so that makes me think either the modem or how it is connected is at fault.

I've moved the PC upstairs to the same room as the master socket, so it's not a length issue I think. I have just a DSL filter thingy plugged into the master socket with my modem and the phone line plugged into that.

I think I'll try a new modem anyway, this one isn't signed for use with XP.

If I may voice what is generally common knowledge and i'm sure your aware of being a user, alcatel are really shit.

I got one of those gay ass manta ray modems and boy did it suck. I had a problem with connection numbers, but the initialising wasn't really a problem. I can remember XP shutting down the usb ports periodically so you had to turn off the hibernation and shut down usb to save power features.

However could this specific problem be USB related, the stalling might be an issue with the usb hub and transfer rates? Do you have a USB 2.0 port you could try if its not in already? In addition to upgrading its drivers and firmware, you might want to reinstall/update the USB its plugged into too. Its unlikely to be this, but if the usb port is flakey, if it shut down and restarted, it would go to 'initialising' after it turned back on.
