Just got this email from our host:
Quote:
I?m writing you today to let you know that we?re not going to be able to host you much longer for free. Right now we?re running in to financial disaster and at the current moment, we?re standing a good chance of losing the server because I don?t have the money to pay this months bill. It was either the mortgage or the server and you know how that goes.

We?re going to have to work on some kind of plan where you either put up Google advertisements and get your users to click, or you pay on a monthly basis. If you ever wanted your own server we could make you one HELL of a deal on a fully dedicated. Much cheaper than most places.

Let me know what we can do?

I?m getting desperate..

Bill

This was ultimately inevitable. Thanks to station51.net, we were getting a 'free' hosting deal where we chipped in donations whenever possible (see the donations sticky for details).

Unfortunately though, with the growing size of the site and station51s money problems, it is unfair on our hosts (who really deserve a huge thx for the hosting thus far :beerchug: ) for this to continue.

I'll have a chat with the host and see how much hosting is going to cost., and possible solutions.

Any suggestions on how to solve this will be really appreciated.
Sorry guys,
:(

Might be worth comparing with

Well we'll see, I just saw that email and it was inevitable. Bill's been great and allowing us to be hosted for really, beyond a great deal. Just thought I'd give a heads up.

Push comes to shove I can afford a small subscription a month, but being a student means I'm pushed for cash most of the time :(

I think that some people here would be happy to help you out with that spud :)

It also might be worth taking a look at a "one off" hit on that server to see whether it's worth considering.

Okay I've done some chatting, and if we want our own server:
Quote:
Dedicated 2.0GHz half a gig of ram and 80GB Of HD space. 100Mbit connection and 1000GB of transfer per month. $110 a month.

Which is way out of what I can spend of my own money on the site a month :( It would mean no speed problems or downtime though, plus there's the option of hosting subsites. There's no setup fee at the moment either.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hosting the site on the current server is manageable though, I'll post more info after I talk to Bill :)

Maybe, but as I already wrote in the donation thread: Never with PayPal.

actually, there aren't many at all. You need a card for everything, which I'm assuming is the problem with paypal. ;)

Nope, the card is not the problem. When I entered my address, they claimed it did not exist. When I tried to contact them, there was no email-address, not even a decent web-form, but I was supposed to find my way through a couple of stupid questions, which none was quite fitting for my situation. I wanted to pay someone and not participate in some peculiar question game. What does this business scum think how they can treat customers? Sorry, I never accept such an behaviour. No normal business would try such stunt, when it cannot hide behind some stupid forms.

I've never used paypal and don't particuarly want to. Any chance of a PO box number we could send cheques to, or is this not cost-effective? I've never looked into it myself but I'd contribute, just don't like paypal

Who me? :wacky:

Yeah, I keep a P.O. Box and have mail sent to physical address too. $48.00 a year here, but in smaller towns, like where I grew up, was only around $12.00 (probably higher now).

I've never had a problem with paypal.

Whatever needs to happen to keep the site going... you surely have my support.

Neither me. That doesn't mean they are perfect or even good, but never had any problems. You want to watch it if you get a lot of money into your account, since paypal have been known to seize assets if you break their rules on warez, which they are very gun-hoe about (infact, station51 had some problems with ebay, but that got sorted).

I use my account all the time, to buy off of ebay, pay for hosting, donations for this site... very convient and had no problems. You have to verify your card and email, and thats about it :)
