Where's Jet Set Willy? I know it's primitive by today's standards but it was perhaps the most innovative game ever and the godfather of Sonic, Mario etc. And it cost me a sizeable chunk of 1984 cos I was sad enough to play the thing for about 6 hours a day :mrgreen:

RE4 i a million times better than RE1:Rebirth, and RE1:Rebirth (the GCN remake) is a million times better than RE2.

If you've not seen rebirth its awesome, its changed a lot, what with the combat defense system (you die with less zombie bites, one on hard i think), but you have a secondary line of defense (like jill sticks a dagger in their heads if one gets too close). Plays and looks better than the rest of the previous franchise.

RE4 is just leagues, and leagues better than the rest of the franchise. Its gameplay is so beyond the rest of them, yet it still manages to feel like a RE game. Capcom did a good job.

@george,
Forgive me if i'm wrong, but didn't Donkey Kong have two sequels out by that time? :lol: Then again i guess that's what you meant by godfather, a loose connection that really doesn't seem important to anyone outside of the mafia? :lol: Na, it was a great game, but it wasn't that innovating in the scheme of things as far as i remember from descriptions. Then again, I can only look back with the forsight to know that and knowing about the other not so big games that beat it to the punch, given that i was born in 1984 :mrgreen:

Fun though.

IIRC before JSW there were no arcade games where the player could move around in a non-linear manner, I still regard this as the first arcade/adventure, unless anyone can contradict this.

I thought manic miner was sidescrolling? Pitfall definitely waw ;)

I don't think it really had that as big an influence as pitfall or donkey kong on platform gaming. It did have some influence on Action Adventure though as you say, all the early games did, so it was important none the less.

Wouldn't be in my top 30 or so though. No matter how much nostalgia it holds, same goes for donkey kong and pitfall... they've been surpassed.

Some nice info on platformers:

My brother and i spent a few weeks trying to draw up a map for JSW, we gave up
when we realised that lots of the screens overlap, so the map wouldn't work.

taking of speccy games, what about DIZZY!, treasure island dizzy, or spellbound
dizzy are my favs, got a speccy emulator with all 11 though.

I have, it's not a platform game in the strictest sense though, it's more or less identical to Lode Runner

Nah, you had to complete one screen on Manic Miner to go to the next. Pitfall was side scrolling but you didn't have the same ability to move around the different screens without following a set pattern.
