Anybody seen or heard of this before - ratDVD

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... ratdvd.cfm

It apparently can convert a full DVD9 to 1.8 GB. I admit I was skeptical, but hey who knows.

Quote:
ratDVD takes a full featured DVD-9 movie and puts it into a highly compressed .ratDVD container format file of about 1.x GB in size - while preserving all the features of the original DVD such as:

* Full anamorphic picture, seamless branching, multiple video angles, multiple audio channels, subpictures, etc.
* Keep movie versions (Directors Cut, Theatrical version, etc.), Alternate story endings, making of, video commentary , cut scenes, etc..
* Keep complete menus, navigation and features
* Reliable high quality, valid check-summed container.

Nah, I did have a scoot through the forums though and it doesn't look too hot:

And when it says this on the homepage, well.....

For a lot of people ratDVD will not be a good enough solution for backups, unless you store all your backups on your PC.

It was discussed on FH and the only pertinent comment really is:

OK, at 2:00AM it was done...

What I'v read bout other experiences, it should take bout 4h to complete, mine was 18h... and it doesnt work. Even if I open it to back ratDVD it just says "wrong fileversion" DAMN!

OK another thing, size... I'v red some 1/3 compression, with great quality. Mine did blow up from 7,199,043,584 bytes to 8,822,771,712 bytes...

So my conclusion.

I did something terribly wrong and try again...

better reviews on afterdawn, Here

I'll get back on this subject...

That was on Sat June 4th and no further posts since then so......

sounds like mkv and to all intents and purposes, the quality is reported to be vastly inferior to MPEG4.

Hopefully it will improve with time, but at the moment MPEG4 and Nero are ten steps ahead i believe.

If your wanting an advanced container, it might be worth checking out mkv. Heard about it though, any product made to help in the customisation and distrubution of media is a good thing regardless, particularly if it is an open source product.

I know I'm bumping an old topic but I've recently had the misfortune to see Combat Shock and The Nightmare Before Christmas on RatDVD format and to say the quality is vastly inferior to MPEG4 is like saying Adolf Hitler wasn't a very nice man. Unwatchable IMO, I put up with this in the late 80's watching rare bootlegs cos it was the only way of seeing them but in this day and age, no. I like the concept though, let's hope they improve the quality. It could also benefit from a dedicated player that works more like a DVD ie chapter stops, return to menu etc.
