Since this is a frequent problem, I've grabbed what voltages you should expect and the tolerance that a decent PSU can take:

Code:
+5VDC ? 5 %
-5VDC (if used) ? 10 %
+12VDC ? 5 %
-12VDC ? 10 %
+3.3VDC ? 4 %
+5VSB ? 5 %

As far as i'm aware, in volt terms the ideals are:
---
V5+ = 5v+
V12+ = 12v+
Vcore = 1.66
Vagp = 1.5
VIO = 3.38
VDIMM = 2.6
VBAT = 3.13
5VSB = 5.16

Please correct those figures if they are wrong.

They look fine Except for vcore which varies according to the chip you're running, my x2 for example runs @ 1.35, older x2s @ 1.45 and the a64s @ 1.65

your Vdimm is a little high as well, it defaults @ 2.6v for ddr memory

Well i got these for mine, which is why i posted:
V5+ = 5.02 - 5.05
V12+ = 12.34 - 12.40
Vcore = 1.66 - 1.68
Vagp = 1.5
Vio = 3.37 - 3.39
VDIMM = 2.72
VBAT = 3.13
5VSB = 5.16

Been having restarts, but its a newish psu and i don't see a problem with the voltages... doesn't look like they are going to be easy to solve. Get nothing in the event log or any blue screen... annoying as hell.

Try upping your vdimm to 2.9 and see if it helps, if it does it's the memory not the PSU

You can also use MBM to monitor and log voltages etc

What CPU have you got? (IIRC it's an a64 4000+ is that right?)

no that's a Athlon XP 2400+, i clocked the memory down just now and seeing if that makes much difference.

Have you checked the CPU temperature?

I had the same problem here and that was the cause.

My motherboard has a safety feature that shuts the computer down
when the CPU reaches a certain temp. Mine was about 90C (ouch ) :D

i've never had a problem with cpu temperature before, I use a Zalman cooling system and the fan speed is on slowest.
Come to think of it, PSU is set to slowest speed too. I turned on hot shut down now though and we'll see

Can anyone recommend a decent tool that can monitor cpu and psu temperatures, and voltage levels? I tried a few but they were ropey.

I open to the possibility of it being something like voltage, faulty memory or even heat... I first noticed the freezing during encoding and that's when it most frequently happens. When i'm using emule too.

It happened after some changes, mainly adding more hard drives, removing some pci cards, adding one, and then putting a brand new PSU in.

I use a program called Speedfan for monitoring.
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

The only bad thing about it is the temps are reported as Temp1, Temp2, Temp3,... so you need to figure out which one is which.
