d0c, you're mad :)

isn't the "new" amiga just a PPC amiga with a new OS?

[edit]yes it is :
Quote:
Power System
AmigaOne-XE motherboard with either G3 (750Fx@800MHz) or G4 (745x@800MHz)
80GB HD
DVD-ROM
CDRewriter drive
512MB registered memory
CPU Cooler
Floppy Drive
Soundblaster Live 5.1 sound card
ATI Radeon 7000 32MB graphics card (or better supported ATI Radeon card if/when supported by OS4)
PS/2 multimedia keyboard
Optical or cordless mouse
7-bay Midi ATX tower with plexiglass side panel and internal illumination
Debian Linux PPC Distribution + AmigaOne install CD
LinuxPPC & UAE preinstalled
Printed 'Quickstart' guide
OS4-enabled BIOS (& OS4 license with Earlybird systems ordered and paid for before 31 March 2004)
Onboard ethernet and USB
Assembled, tested and burnt-in

So basically a 3 year old mac with a 4 year old gfx card with the POTENTIAL of running Wokbench4.

If that's the amiga that's coming back, you can count me WAY out :)

Just watched the demo too, and there's nothing in it a half decent spec PC couldn't do.

the new amiga of today is basically a developer tool and hobbyists machine. jesus christ what the heck do you espect, the new amiga is in its beginning even the os aint finsihed yet, its still in the pre-release. there is a along way to go, it will never compete with microsoft or intel/amd boxes as we know them today. hw at this time is not important but the os is. its typical for window user to scream at everything that is unknown and strange or is not about gighz. you have never tryed the new amiga os or anything but i can tell you this, the new amiga is more about software than hw, it runs so fast on the hw u described above and is more responsiv than any ms windows installed on a 3gighz pc, i can tell you that. anyway u never know what future will bring amiga is back and its making its first steps and that rocks :)

Umm, d0c, I'm not sure how to tell you this, I don't "scream at everything that is unknow or strange", I'm open to looking at other H/W, but I like NEW hardware, when I look for a music system I don't bother looking for 8-track, wax cylinders, vinyl, tape or DAT, I look for what's up to date, well supported and current which will hopefully give me a few years of enjoyment. If I were to spen ~$1000 on one of these AmingaOnes, I would be buying a 4 year old system (for todays prices) which is the computing equivalent of wax cylinders, ohgod had it right with his vinyl joke ;) , no support, not current and as far as I'm concerned, completely irrelevant. It has NO software, christ even the OS isn't finished!. I used to have a Amiga 4000 back in the day so I'm certainly aware of the fact that amigaOS in nice and all that shit, BUT the amiga is DEAD, attempting to breath life into it's (incredibly) still twitching corpse by basing it on 4 year old hardware is just going to stop it twitching.

The amiga died with Commodore and only slightly demented fanboys think there is ANY life in the system. Get over it, FFS you amiga fanatics and your inability to let the fucking thing just die gracefully.

I hope I'm wrong, but in all honesty d0c, fanboyism aside do you REALLY see this frankensteins monster of a machine succeeding?

i am not a 100% fanboy but its very intressting to follow and see how it develops, amiga as u and i know it died in 1994 thats rigth. but the amiga os lives on and thats what amiga is, not the hardware. i dunno if it will sucsses or not in the future, and it will at least take 2 or 3 years or more before it are of any intresst for the average pc joe, but i welcome everything that can make things better....
