Six Companies to Form Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) Alliance

Tokyo (JCNN) - Six companies will form the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD)Alliance to accelerate the development of HVD, develop a marketplace and promote this technology and products.

The companies are CMC Magnetics, Fuji Photo Film (TSE: 4901), Nippon Paint, Optware, Pulstec Industrial, and Toagosei. The HVD technology will be able record more than one terabyte of data, 200 times the capacity of a single layer DVD, on a disc the same size as today's DVD at a rate of over 1Gbps, 40 times the speed of the DVD.

Sony, they are nothing more than a backstreet wannabe eletronics corporation  Can you believe they once tried to launch a console called the "PlayStation". Everyone knew it would never take off.

Who ever bothered with SACD ? Minidisc wasn't that big of succes either.....

IT IS becomming a trench war though......

Both Blue ray and HvD have some hefty backing.....

3do wasn't a format silly ;)

Like them or lump them panasonic practically created the home VHS market AND the DVD market, some of the first players / recorders for both. They have very, very clearer technicians ;)

Hence, watch panasonic.

I'm not saying buy they're stuff, I'm just saying, they tend to back the correct format for media.

I am with you Spud, I think they do carry more weight than ppl realise. As for Sony, they have had a few blunders, minidisk is just shit, tho the WalkMan was cool, last century

I reckon Minidisc would have taken off if it weren't for the timing, it lost out to CD-R. It was Minidisc that made me realise it would be a good idea to replace my shitty old tape collection.

Not too sure about that. Minidisc would have taken off if sony hadn't patented it so vigorously.

Propreity formats like minidiscs aren't such a smart idea.
