I'm considering doing the SATA thing upon my next upgrade

I want to have 2 SATA HD's hooked up to a RAID driver (I don't know which is better...Raid 1 or Raid 2..) but I'll need to get several gigs of data off my old Hard Drives.

Does the RAID and SATA Stuff make it very hard to throw in an IDE drive and transfer the data?

I consider this to be a terrible time in Computer History. There are no standards right now. SATA or IDE? AGP or PCI Express? DDR or DDR2?

Blah blah blah blah blah. I wish my comp wasn't 2 years old so I wouldn't have to upgrade.

*Sigh*

RAID0 is speed
RAID1 has 100% redundancy = wasting a hard drive
RAID01 needs 3 drives, and waste 1 drive, and the other two are hooked up for speed.

If you want the full capacity your going to be using RAID0

hmmm... well do you want to live in a cave or a house with central heating. There's no buts about it SATA, PCII-E and DDR2... I don't see how you can even confuse the matter.

I'm not confused.
I'm poor.

I'm running IDE Hard Drives on an IDE Motherboard that has an AGP port.
I can't afford all this new crap. It's not fair.

Maybe I'll just upgrade my case, chip, ram, buy a motherboard that has PCI-E 16X for the Graphics port, and buy a new Vid card, and leave my Hard Drives as is.

SATA is very cheap, price difference is negligable. SATA drives themselves are roughly the same as normal IDE.
PCI-E should allow you to keep all your existing cards.

The price hike is in CPU and GFX cards.

Your motherboard, nowadays should have everything you need at sub-?100. I would not cheap out on the mianboard.

All should have SATA else its out of date. You should only be looking for perhaps sound off the mainboard. DRR2 is expensive, you can debateably drop this (although I'm certain you'll need it for your CPU if your going 64bit).

Most mainboards will have 2 IDE channels and then at least 2SATA. you can keep your hdd, but I would strongly recommend putting your OS on a SATA drive.

Yes, but that's not the point. The point is I can't afford all the rest of it plus replacing my Hard Drives.

I don't know what DRR2 is. Did you mean DDRII? Because DDRII is an Intel thing, and if you think I'm upgrading to an Intel chip you are crazy.

I think this upgrade will just be mainboard (with PCI-E), chip, RAM, case, and Vid Card. SATA can wait, especially if I have the mainboard to support it. After that it's just a matter of buying the drives (which aren't that expensive).
