Yeah, I've no doubt the DS will have better software, but WHY does it have to be so ugly

I think they went for the retro look. Have a look at the 20 year old N stuff and you will realise where the styling came from.

TBH the PSP did not impress me much, just like playing a PSOne game, nothing new.

One of teh things that struck me first was the use of the second screen, and future uses too.

The DS looks like an old game and watch.
I'd rather own a DS than a PSP though, as it's all about the software and the PSP will be a portable chavstation :)

I think the looks of the DS grow on you after a short period, I was a bit shocked when I got mine out of the box, but now I love the way it looks. And the games I've played are really great, a lot better than the GBA release titles. I completed all my games now though, waiting for Yoshi Touch & Go or whatever they're gonna call it. I played all through Mario 64 using the touchscreen controls and although it takes a bit of getting used to it's quite easy after a while, and at least you can change it if you don't like it.

Still not seen a PSP so can't really comment, but I doubt it will impress me that much.

What is the final verdict on the PSP battery life? How many hours? Last I heard was about 3 hours on a heavy UMD-loading game, haha pathetic. That's not really portable in my book if you have to recharge it more than once a day with fairly heavy use. My ipod battery went down to 2 hours charge and until I replaced the battery I stopped taking it out because it would be too frustrating to have it cut off when I still wanted to use it.

Zelda, and if it doesn't have one its not worth buying yet ;)

Infact, its backwards compatible so grab Zelda: Links Awakening, Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, and those other two zelda games by capcom :wacky:
Then sell it and buy some crack. ;)

PSP batery life is supposed to be ~6-8hrs.

I got one thru nintendovip club as a prerelease with mario and the wario touchware and metroid demos. (it was for my kids birthday ok ;)) the touchscreen is both a godsend and a curse. Using it for control in Mario is bloody infuriating especially on the "void" and boss levels where speed and control are important. However its fantastic fun with the pen for the minilevels and touchware.
Can't recommmend any other games as I haven't played any yet but simply for the fact that u can carry a game with the depth of mario64 around in yr pocket makes it worth it. Also the hardware itself looks and feels high quality.
If only it had a mini analogue stick instead of the d-pad it would be perfect.

that raises another question actually, is the GBA linker compatible with the DS, the answer to which is YES :)

Which is the best linker to go for or will any of them do?

for linker go and look in the other thread about DS where I explained it all...

..as for other ds games, project rub is pretty fun, wario ware is cool, but getting a bit bored of it after playing all 3 in the series. If you haven't played one before, get that. I just got yoshi touch & go it uses the touchscreen and dualscreen really well but I don't know how long the fun will last, there are only four modes and one more unlockable to go I think :?

I noticed the odd file extensions for movies and music though :(

I take it that means no support for avi and mp3?

You can play loads of stuff but you have to convert it
Quote:
11.

How to Play movies and music with G6Flash3. Which kinds of movies and music format can be played?
It is very simple to play movies and music. You only download movies or music files that will be playing in G6Flash3 Card, and insert Flash Card into GBA / NDS, then switch it on. Select Media Player Icon and click "A" button to confirm, than select Movie / Music Icon after GBA Movie Player interface appears.

The format can be played on GBA / NDS is the special GBM and GBS format. Have already provide abundant Movies and music for everybody to download at present. You can't play some general formats directly on a GBA / NDS, but the format can be played on a GBA / NDS when being converted into GBM and GBS format by the conversion software that we offered.

File format that the our software supports at present:
Dobly AC3 audio frequency file (*. AC3)
target's file of DVD video (*. VOB)
wave form sound file of Microsoft (*. WAV)
MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2 file (*. MP2)
MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3 file (*. MP3)
Real media file (*. RA, *. RM, *. RAM, *. RMVB)
MPEG-1 media file (*. Mpeg, *. Mpg)
MPEG-2 media file (*. M2V)
Windows media file (*. AVI, *. ASF, *. WMA, *. WMV)
VCD video file (*. DAT)
QuickTime media file (*. MOV)
MPEG-4 media file (*. AVI)
DivX media file (*. AVI)

err, that's a total contradiction though  if you have to convert then it doesn't support it, so it can't play anything :(

Its a shame really, it would be a lot more appealing if it had proper mp3 and xvid support.

That's a big blow, I'd probably buy a psp over a DS at this point if that's the case (and my balls were in a vice and had to buy either or  ).

Lets just say imo, its an urgent priority to get mp3 support. I heard of an official nintendo mpeg4/mp3 adapter a while back before launch, was this just a rumour?

I had a feeling you would say that Spud, but I thought posting that was the clearest explanation. Does PSP really support xvid straight up? That device you're talking about is called Playan ( http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n08/playan/ - jap site), it hasn't come out of Japan yet. Nintendo did some game downloads you could put on it too but I heard they were shit.

Also, here is the latest super-hyper rumour for DS fanboys about tunneling. Hard to say if it's fake or not, but it would be nice: http://www.jadrule.tk/ Monday we'll find out.

Found this article, seems psp has major poor quality screen issues:

Quote:
Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that the first week sales of the PSP generated more than USD 150 million at North American retailers. The number 2 consumer electronics company in the world, it seems, has not moved its handheld console as well as it had hoped. Early last month Sony had announced it was delaying its European PSP launch in order to guarantee 1 million units for the US launch. The latest estimates claim 500K - 700K units in total have sold, although the official Sony statement only mentions the sale of 500,000 PSP Value Packs in the first two days.

The PSP launch has not been trouble free and a variety of screen-related issues, mainly dead pixels, have been causing new owners grief. Sony has implemented a form of dead pixel exchange policy but a lot needs to be done in order to make gamers feel confident about their new handheld console.

Despite the doom and gloom however, it is clear that things can only get better for Sony. The price should, eventually, drop and the sale of 700K units may be below forecasts but is a considerable achievemnt for any product. Nintendo may be expecting to have shipped 6 million DS units by the end of March but it is selling a cheaper product that has been in the market longer and is globally available. The PSP is not currently available in Europe and the latest estimates suggest that it won't be until June.

However many problems the PSP may be experiencing, fans are really supporting the device and demand has been high. PSP launched in North America on March 24 with lines snaking for blocks at retailers across the nation with many locations extending business hours for midnight sales or early openings to accommodate anxious consumers. Thousands of PSP fans at special Sony Computer Entertainment America hosted events in San Francisco and New York even braved rain and sleet to be among the first to experience PSP.
