They describe the whole market as unprofitable at the present time.
Just because you sell for an immediate gain does not mean you are making money. They are LOSING money, hence they are selling cars for a loss. If they were selling cars for a gain, they would be MAKING money. But no, it is the Truck/SUV market that's profitable. Not cars.

Xbox = $149.99 (rumoured to be dropping to $99.99 soon too)
Xenium Chip = $45.99
solder = $0.99
Soldering Iron = $5(?)
Mate to do soldering = $20 (if he's tight)

total = ~$200

OR do this :

Xbox = $149.99 (rumoured to be dropping to $99.99 soon too)
Spider Chip (no solder on ALL xbox's) = $34.99

OR THIS :

Xbox = $149.99 (rumoured to be dropping to $99.99 soon too)
Mechassault = $19.99
Memory card = $19.99

The Xenium is really only necessary if you're going to fuck around alot, and a chip is really only necessary if you want to put it a bigger HD without having to use the PC to do it

There is a HUGE difference between selling a product at a loss and being unprofitable.

M$ deliberately sell the xbox at a (substantial) loss, figuring games and accessory sales will make up the difference (and more).

Ford (I assume) sell the cars at a per unit profit, but I assume they have stock sitting on forecourts and lots slowly depreciating, and it's market forces driving the profit down, not a choice by Ford to sell the car at a loss. Also as Spud pointed out, ford have only the sale of the car to make a profit, they don't profit from the petrol it uses.

The mobile phone industry and the razor industry are two of the only other industries to work in a simillar way to the console industry in that the Hardware to enable you to use the product is sold at a loss and the product (Razors, Airtime, Games etc) is where the profit is made.

Well, I doubt it's an ideal situation for M$ too, right? I mean, I doubt they are consciously choosing to sell at a loss. They just need to too have any market share at all, and why not do it since the big moneymaker in console makin seems to be game licenses anyway? Same with cars, I bet. I bet they make more on the financing and repairing in 1 year than they do selling the cars in 5.

Just my own speculation there though. I don't know what kind of deals they have with banks or whatnot.

But I don't agree with the depreciation aspect re: Ford. Every car dealership makes the biggest money leasing new cars, and then they make the second most selling used cars (which are usually rebuilt wrecks or flood survivors or whatnot...very occassionally lease returns) and the third category...the one where they make the least money...is selling brand new cars.

That's why there are so many private Used Car places and not nearly as many privately owned New Car places. And all the New car places are big and ostentatious seated in buildings that look like mountains with windows.

It takes a lot of money and credit to sell new cars for not as much profit. You need a lot of other business going on to manage it.

Anywho, we should all get MBA's so we can make money and buy more Horror movies...ya know...if we wanted to be so unhappy we'd have a psychotic episode.

What you should do, drpoopypantz, is to READ the posts by myself and Spud in order to realise WHY M$ (and sony) sell consoles at a loss and why ford don't (deliberately) sell cars at a loss.

I know little about Cars and how they are / aren't sold, but I know how the console market works and I know that it is NOT the same as the car market for the reasons stated above.

BTW the first step is quite cool, it allows you to use your xbox controller on your PC (while maintaining Xbox compatibility) and doubles up as an action replay.
