Another one from my monthly trip round gaming sites:
Quote: | Nintendo has filed patents for a technology called displacement mapping, which is a technique that is used to render detailed surfaces while successfully simultaneously keeping polygon count low.
Nintendo has filed two patents regarding the technology. One of them refers to a specialized hardware for vector operations, optimising the graphics hardware so that the displacement mapping is computed efficiently. The other one reduces the strain put on the CPU that is caused by rendering a 3d world in 2d.
The technology is not new but Nintendo is patenting its particular usage in Nintendo projects.
It is very likely that the technology be used in Nintendo upcoming game console, the Nintendo revolution.
It is believed that, with the power of displacement mapping Nintendo can achieve better graphics than the XBox 360 with much less power. |
http://news.portalit.net/fullnews_Ninte ... s_953.htmlQuote: | Nintendo To Displace Revolution??? A newly discovered patent shows how Reggie's porting claims may be substantiated... Posted: 12:23 on 12 Dec 2005 By: Jon Wilcox
Despite the lack of figures it's been known for some time that the Revolution won't be powered to the levels of Xbox 360 or PlayStation3, but last weeks claims by Reggie Fils-Amis that third-party ports for the next-gen system "...can be as easy or as complex as a team wants it to be..." will have had many pondering as to how that can be accomplished.
A recent patent filed at the US Patent Office, number 6,971,957, describes how Nintendo aims to utilise Displacement Mapping techniques to cut down on the processing power required to generated high quality models. Displacement Mapping is a technique where a high-quality mesh physically transforms (displaces) a lower-quality object. Using the technique, a displacement map can be placed over a mesh of only a few hundred polygons and still look as comparable to a model consisting over thousands, even millions, of polygons. What this means in effect is that by using displacement mapping, Revolution games could look as good as Xbox 360/PlayStation3 titles without the need for high-powered processors such as CELL.
Techniques to create an illusion of depth such as Bump Mapping, have merely faked an impression of depth; what Displacement Mapping does is actually create that depth, and was a technique used WETA Digital to create the Cave Trolls in Lord of the Rings. The next-generation of systems will be the first to take advantage of the technique, with Microsoft filing for a similar patent with regards to the Xbox 360, so never mind this round of the console wars being the "HD-era", it could instead be the age of displacement.
Whether this patent is the smoking gun to Fils-Amis' claims will have to be seen when titles for the Revolution are unveiled in 2006, but it certainly continues to build up the intrigue around the next-gen system.
We'll have more on Revolution shortly... |

Zelda: Twilight Princess to work with Revolution controller
Quote: | Back in August, gamers everywhere were crushed when Nintendo announced its most anticipated title, Zelda: Twilight Princess, would be delayed to mid-2006. At the time, Aonuma stated that the delay was necessary in order to add "some incredible elements," but that's as specific as he got. Naturally, most people assumed that Aonuma and his team would be adding new dungeons, sidequests, and such, and those are probably correct assumptions.
But, perhaps the biggest reason for the delay has now been revealed by NGC, a UK magazine - Twilight Princess "will be playable on the forthcoming Revolution using the upcoming console's unique controller." It's still coming out on GameCube, but when the disc is inserted into the Revolution, you'll be able to play it using the Rev's remote.
So, assuming that this news is legit - now that you know this, do you think the delay is worth it? Or, do you still think Nintendo would've been better off getting it out this holiday season? Let us know by posting a comment below.

Quote: | Following all the DS hoo-hah Iwata-san moved on to Revolution and paid a tribute to the 15 strong Nintendo team, that worked on and developed the Revolution controller. He went on to say that the controller is evidence of how Nintendo is disrupting console gaming by investing in the gameplay experience rather than high tech on-screen performance. Mr. Iwata continued with the disruption idea and told his rivals off for creating such gaming monsters that cost USD 50-60 and have enormous budgets since to create high-tech visuals you need a lot of people and a long time. He also accused licensing of further raising development costs. He stressed that Nintendo does not think in the same way. |
http://megagames.com/news/html/console/ ... tive.shtmlQuote: | In a press release simultaneously with an announcement made during Nintendo's keynote speech at GDC 2006 this morning, Nintendo announced that Sega and Hudson have signed on as partners for the Revolution's Virtual Console service. With this, the emulators will be best games from the two companies for the TurboGraphix-16 (or PC-Engine, as it was called in Japan) and Sega Genesis will be downloadable and playable for the Revolution.
Curiously, only Sega Genesis games were mentioned as planned for the Virtual Console system in the deal with Sega (um, hello? Master System? Saturn? Game Gear? 32X?!?), but the partnership promises that many of the best out of the Genesis' 1,000+ gaming library will be available for the Revolution. Individual deals will have to be worked out with publishers for titles to be released on the Revolution, but with a growing interest in classic gaming, publishers and license owners will hopefully be fast to get on-board with Genesis support. And considering that most of the TurboGraphix-16's games released were published and/or developed by Hudson and NEC, it seems that the vast majority of games for the system will automatically fall into that partnership without much more licensing work from the company.
With NES, SNES, N64, and now Genesis and TG-16 on-board, the Revolution has got years of gaming already ready to play as soon as it launches later this year. Look for more news on supported systems and licensed games for the Nintendo Virtual Console as things develop.

March 15, 2006 - In an interview with Nintendo of Europe this week, Nintendo's master designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, seemed to confirm that the company's new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be able to use the Revolution's controller for added functionality.
Asked how the GameCube adventure was progressing, Miyamoto responded: "I would say that we are progressing well with completing it. And one of the most important features is that, because Revolution can run GameCube software, when you play Twilight Princess on Revolution you can take advantage of the Revolution controller."
Miyamoto did not offer further specifics in the interview, but commented in a follow-up piece in German news magazine Der Spiegel that players would be able to fire arrows using Revolution's remote controller.
Online reports have for months suggested that when Twilight Princess is inserted into a Revolution, gamers will be given the option to play using the freehand-style controller. Miyamoto's latest comments back up these reports.
We'll have more as it breaks. |

Quote: | Remember that violent Katana game from Ubisoft that was rumored to be in development around the 1st? Turns out it's real, and Game Informer has the hands-on exclusive in their upcoming May issue. One of the more interesting points in the article that has been revealed so far is that Nintendo has been closely involved in the development of Red Steel, which is why they're comfortable letting it be the very first Revolution title given major exposure. It is a planned launch title, and we can expect to see it in playable form at E3. It will also have online multiplayer with up to four players. Ubisoft Paris, comprised of people who worked on the Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, and Ghost Recon titles, is the dev team behind Red Steel.
The game will be a fully 3D First Person Shooter, taking full advantage of the Rev's unique controller, allowing the player to dodge behind a corner by twisting it, push cover by pushing it forward, or reload by pulling it back. How you hold the controller will also be reflected on screen by how your character holds his weapon, which will be especially important when you're whipping out a katana to get up close and personal with an enemy. Also mentioned is mimicking a throwing-a-ball motion in order to a toss a grenade in-game, or even roll it along the ground.
For the game you will take on the role of a man who is engaged to a woman whose father is a prominent Yakuza leader in possession of a a significant ceremonial katana, one which a rival Yakuza leader attempts to steal in order to gain power within the organization. The attempt is thwarted, but in the process your fiance is kidnapped and her father is mortally wounded. Before dying, the man bequeaths the sword to you and charges you with going to Japan and getting his daughter back.
In order to do this, you'll have to go after several high-ranking Yakuza and earn their loyalty, typically by defeating them in one-on-one combat with a katana and sparing their lives. You'll apparently be rewarded more by using non-lethal force, as defeated bosses will offer up alternate game paths, new weapons, or information, in addition to the loyalty of their gangs.
We can apparently expect more information on Red Steel in the coming days. Looks like the buildup to E3 is just starting. |

That sounds pretty fun, you can hold your gun sidewise and look cool
\other news, Twilight Princess is a Gamecube game but because of the Revolution only features, they are launching it at the same time as Revolution to push sales for the rev apparantly.

Revolution to launch with 20 Games
http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=6197
Quote: | George Harrison said in a recent interview that Nintendo's Revolution console will be launching with twenty games, a third of which will be developed and released by Nintendo themselves. It is assumed that this number does not include Virtual Console titles.
Only one launch title has been spoken of recently, which is Ubisoft's recently revealed katana and gun-slinging game, Red Steel. There has been speculation and comments from Nintendo that we may see Super Smash Bros, Mario, or possibly Miyamoto's new project in the launch window as well. That's only three Nintendo titles of the six/seven that Harrison's statement implies, and only one third party title of 13/14.
Stay tuned to GAF for the latest developments on the Revolution launch lineup. My guess is we probably won't hear too much more about it until E3. |

Classic Horror Game for revolution
http://uk.revolution.ign.com/articles/701/701475p1.html
Actually, news that's on topic for this site.. kinda
Quote: | Sadness Plays in Black and White Nibris reveals new details of its gothic horror Revolution title.
April 12, 2006 - While Nintendo's Revolution is certainly garnering support from gaming giants like Activision and Ubisoft, it isn't surprising that the console's unique design is challenging smaller developers to think outside the, er, double analog sticks.
Maverick Polish developer Nibris today offered additional details on Sadness, one of the company's projects for Nintendo's new console. While the studio is still withholding full details, we now know that Sadness will play out in a stylized gothic horror setting -- completely in black and white.
Such a gutsy choice is just the beginning for Nibris. Rather than focus on fast action and a high body count, Sadness will focus on mood -- one "which will not leave you till the very end of the game" -- and themes such as schizophrenia and narcolepsy. While Nibris mentions super-stylish film Sin City as one comparison, the company says Sadness will take place "pre-World War."
Nibris hopes to take full advantage of the Revolution controller. "Imagine driving away rats with a torch, throwing a rope (as a lasso) when you want to climb over the wall, or slitting the throat of a persecutor with a piece of glass... All of this with the help of the Revolution controller."
The company also illuminated its decision to develop for the Revolution, rather than other next-generation consoles.
"Nibris decided to follow Nintendo's path, which fights the stagnation which has occurred in video games, and creates new trends," commented Nibris' Lukasz Oskard. "With this move, we want to create a unique environment, which is only available in Sadness."
Nibris is currently seeking a publisher for the game. |

Could you possibly be less unbiased in news reporting ?
Anyway , that's Red Steel stuff has already been shot down for what it is:
A next gen lightgun game. Think a more advanced ( and true, more stylish) time crisis...
Free roaming 3d game my ass.
OUR TEH HALO 3 WILL P@WN THIS JUNK
...and forgive my for being more excited about RE5 & alan wake than the above mentioned gothic stuff....
Bold move in style though...

less bias? they come directly from three different sites, http://www.megagames.com , http://revolution.ign.com and http://www.gamesarefun.com. Two of which are all console news, one is revolution only.
and posted verbatim, I have posted barely any comments at all... hows that bias? there are two out of many articles one saying "sounds pretty fun" and the other saying "its on topic". I can imagine in the eyes of an unrelenting sony fanboy that's torture, but in actuality, its not actually very true is it. The only time you'll see me fanboy is when zelda comes up, and quite honestly, that's not really needed given how good the franchise is. Its a gamecube not a revolution game though, of course you'll know.
Compare it to your PS3 "sex toy" thread with your speculation on system stats and relentless praise, and ignoring of the price and lack of power, and then ask who's being bias? Yeah, i really pre-rendered this thread and preached the truth... oh wait, that's your company of devotion mr sony brown noser
Come on, you can't honestly buy into your own crap can you?
The revolution is a cheap ass console, everyone knows that and I don't think anyone, and certainly not me, is pretending otherwise. Me copying and pasting news exactly as its reported is bias? Just cos the ps3 got delayed, its specs got vastly downgraded and the price got jacked up, don't go picking on the small kids (revolution), but then I guess there's a very good reason your not bitching in the Xbox 2 thread (given how wank the ps3 sounds next to the xbox2 )
Quote: | Free roaming 3d game my ass |
Now i know you don't even read them and just troll, you know you use the analogue stick in one hand to move around don't you? That allows you to walk round according to the articles. That's the whole point of freeroaming. That would be why the articles say free roaming 3d game, because perhaps it is? perhaps? I don't care for that game personally, and the revolution is still a no sell, along with the xbox2 and most deifnitely the ps3, but at least i don't shit myself that a wanky barely more powerful than the xbox2 but 3x as expensivce but somehow justifiably so if you listen to sony, is going to be any better than the previous bag of shite console or any better than the xbox2. Oh yeah, and RE5 is going to stay exclusive... yeah... at the price its going to cost them, i really doubt that. They might get the same advantage the gamecube did, that being it plays better on the ps3... but given how the pad looks, i doubt that Quote: | Could you possibly be less unbiased in news reporting ? |
Right back at you, at least I post them VERBATIM from the source with a one line comment at best (rarely), and don't buy into the shit like some brown noser I know, that deficates in yellow writing every chance he gets.
Why do you even care anyway, ohgoditsnotimportant now is it?
You don't need to kid your self that you'd ever buy one. You obviously wouldn't buy one even if it saved you from cancer, which of course means you need to ask yourself why are you here, and who really is being biased? I'm guessing its the verbatim reporting of news that bugs you, and not someone reasurring you that you don't need another console and you won't miss out (at the price, one things for sure, your going to have trouble buying another console )
and its not like nintendo haven't failed before, if you've been around you'll have known about the virtual boy
*swish*
your looking a bit burnt
ps. daily quota of insults dished out, i thought it was going to be at maxpayne @ scifi.dd as usual

Must have struck a nerve there somewhere - I'll admit it - don't know where ... but you sound agitated
Now I'm not gonna be lured into an essay of a reply.
My 'accusation' of you being biased was more general intended !
I see absolutely nothing but rave & praise in this topic.
Whereas the ps3 one it's "sony shit this", "sony crap that..."
...if it gets any attention from you at all mind that...
And don't you hide behind magazines - you can cite selectively and thus create any context you'd like....
Still say Red Steel will be a railed experience

lol, yeah right... no nerve, just scoffing at the sony fanboy hypocracy, its quite comical really. The question is how's a rant any different to any other of my posts? tisn't, thats how, i rant about eveyrthing if you've never noticed.
The question is why roll that troll post now after 6 months of straight news posts? The answers simple, admit it, your pissed that the news posts are all verbatim without a comfort bitch to reassure you that its not worth buying.
I don't see how it matters you've already decided not to buy one. If the price was announced at ?800, or that there's a groinal attatchment and a head visor it would be posted and i sure as hell would take the piss, just like i did with the pad, but there is very little news at all beyond what is posted for the revolution... check the sites. ign posted some shit about nintendos profits being at a 3 year high, and some other shit about changes in management that no one cares about, gaf is all online reports and podcasts, and megagames usually just take the piss. Same way i'm not swayed until i see one in action, and then its gotta be something special, or i aint buying any console. Same goes for ps3, if its amazing then i might get one, but its not going to be. Xbox2 sounds like the clear winner.
But it all boils down to you being a sony fanboy once again. one of the known categoristics of a sony fanboy, as you'll know, is that you can't stand the fact that nintendo games are raved about. I know the type, exactly the same back when the psx launched
Sorry buddy, your going to have to justify wasting your pennies some other way because it doesn't tread water as yet
Quote: | I see absolutely nothing but rave & praise in this topic. |
Then your not looking, i think more over though you just see what you want to see. The predominant word here is I, which is inherantly is a sony fanboy trolling a nintendo thread (I don't think either of us have delusions about that do we?) and blatantly ignoring the actual thread. Take a look see at when the pad was announced:
http://forum.dead-donkey.com/viewtopic. ... c&start=20
But i guess you didn't want to hear.
If you did you'd have seen the slating of the pad and the fact it has little appeal for me, which i've kept up since i've seen nothing i like. Now add in the fact half the thread is me raving about zelda which is a gamecube game, not a revolution game, don't get them confused.
Perhaps, just perhaps... don't want to overload you here with reality (like being unplugged from the gayrix)... There's been very little news, what is there to slate beyond the pad and it being a cheap ass thing with no news for, because we don't really know anything and its probably going to stay that way (I doubt people will hear anything about it when its launched ). That might explain why this thread is 1/3 rd the posts are community rumours, 1/2 are zelda for the bubble and the rest are actualy solid news, and outside of your bubble you'd have spotted that's already been done to death on pages 1-3
Please, no magic beans please ohgod, we know what you think, and i thought i'd made it clear what i think and why i'm not buying one already. What do you want me to do, lie and make up news that's not been posted?
I have even less interest in the ps3 than i do the revolution and the xbox2, and my posts should have reflected this, which is why i hardly post in that thread. At least revolution is novel which is why i pop in with posts. Big news is big news, which is why my posts on xbox2 have been about it being cracked, and the posts about sony have been the big news about the ps3, that its gonna cost a shit load, deal with it mr

Topics name needs to be edited....
Quote: | Introducing Nintendo Wii Revolution gets an official name. by Matt Casamassina
April 27, 2006 - Nintendo revealed this morning that the official name of its formerly codenamed Revolution system is Nintendo Wii.
The Big N explained the decision behind the name in a statement, which we've provided below:
Introducing... Wii.
As in "we."
While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.
So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.
Click here to download the official trailer for Nintendo Wii.
Click here for the official website for Wii.
Many forum members, including thousands on IGN.com's message boards, have expressed dissatisfaction over the new Wii name. But in an interview with CNN Money, Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing and corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, defended the title.
"I think people have to look back and let it settle in," Kaplan said. "I'm sure people felt the same way when Google was named - or the iPod. Napster. Yahoo. There's a whole host of unusual names that have become a part of everyday conversation and I think they're viewed now as unique."
Kaplan further stated that a lot of thought went into the final name of the new system.

It's a TERRIBLE name, obviously no-one's told nintendo that "wii" could (and I'm sure will) be pronounced and intended as "wee" i.e piss
God alone knows WTF Nintendo are up to, it looks like they're taking some HUGE risks, I'm not convinced they're going to pay off, much as I love nintendo, they seem to have gone a bit mental

what about these for advertising campaigns?
"Urine for a treat with Nintendo Wii"
"wifi-ready wii"
etc.
You reckon people just don't want to tell the bosses "you sure about this, it sounds an awfully lot like piss?"

More pad secrets revealed
http://megagames.com/news/html/console/ ... ming.shtml
Quote: | The Nintendo controller will feature a microphone and will store a user phonebook/address book while it will be used as a VoIP phone and will help gamers communicate while online without the need for a headset.
Nintendo's controller surprises keep coming in and as the details are revealed so is an underlying theme to the company's plan for the device. The new details mention a microphone built-in to the headset which will allow the controller to be used as a straight-forward VoIP phone. The news also mentions that users will be able to use the phone for video calls although it does not clarify exactly how a camera will come into play in the setup. The interesting news however, relates to the phone/address book details which will be stored on the controller suggesting that Nintendo expects each user of the Wii in the household to own their own Wiimote.
The inclusion of a microphone built-into the controller, along with the speaker announced at E3, will also offer gamers more freedom during online play as they will be able to communicate with fellow gamers without the need for a headset. This makes sense as most images we have of people playing with the infamous device, show them standing up and at some distance from the console.
Just when you think Nintendo has no more Wii related mysteries the company hits you with another one and this time it is the addition of Wiichannel.com to the list of Nintendo owned domains. Rumors of a Wii dedicated interactive channel that will carry animations, games and game trailers, TV shows and other audio/visual content have already started doing the rounds but as most of us have found the hard way, Nintendo is not playing by the book on this one; so expect nothing and anticipate everything. |
So the rumour for a mic in the pad seems to be true too. its gonna now make you look like a bigger retard, swinging your arm round and shouting

Little Losses for the Wii

Quote: | Iwata predicts minimal financial losses on Wii hardware. by Wade Steel
June 7, 2006 - A typical notion for the videogame industry is that of fairly substantial financial losses during the introductory phase of a new console with the expectation that costs will decline as component prices drop and production efficiency increases. However, in a press conference in Tokyo yesterday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated that the Wii would buck this trend and have fairly minimal losses.
Iwata called the notion that the introduction of a new gaming console necessarily leading to significant losses in its initial stages "strange." Iwata went on to state that Nintendo "can't promise we [the company] won't even have a one yen loss, but we are not expecting an enormous loss."
By way of comparison, Sony told investors and analysts to expect that the introduction of the PlayStation 3 would lead to an estimated $884 million loss for the games division in the upcoming fiscal year while Microsoft has admitted that the amount spent on the Xbox 360 was higher than anticipated.
With the Wii's North American launch price to be less than $250, the company expects consoles sales of around 6 million units and software sales of about 17 million units by March 2007. |

Low quality scan of Call of Duty running on a Wii?
So I'm led to believe anyway.
EGM magazine paraphrasing wrote: | Secondly, LucasArts seem to have finally heard Nintendo fans' cries for a lightsaber game; word on the street is that they're already on their way with a new exclusive Star Wars game for the Wii, based heavily on lightsaber mechanics. Thank the Force. |
