Post subject:  Does your work block this site?

I'm wondering who, if anyone has this site censored by their workplace?

Unfortunately it seems, some idiot has submitted this site, or some of this site to Smartfilter and Web-Gateway1 so they get blocked. Luckily for me its just www. and scifi. that are filtered, and you might have noticed a month or so back the urls for some of the images changed from sharing the resources from the frontpage to hosting it seperately on forum. :lol:

Anyway, i've been looking at ways to unblock the entire site. Currently, to access the other sections i use vnc/remote desktop to a machine outside the proxy. Setting a proxy doesn't work, however, i think there's a couple of solutions that might work, for example for a static cached snapshot of a page:
http://www.dead-donkey.com.nyud.net:8090
works, however, not the images or styles, and it is of course just static.

You can setup a remote desktop very easily. Just right click my computer, and then under remote, check remote desktop. You need to setup passwords for your accounts. Click start then click your username and then set a password. The port you need to open on your firewall is 1374 (you should probably do a NAT forward so its a different external port).

Censoring via web proxies is not only an annoyance, they are incredibly backwards and a number of times i've had to vnc home to get to a page i needed to solve a work related problem since they've filtered the site with the answer on.

I've not voted yet because I never thought to bypass the home page and go straight to the forums, I'll have to wait till Monday. They've blocked it for about a year now, I asked the network manager about it but he said it's blocked by a third party.

The reason it gives for the block is "questionable/illegal/gambling", I don't know if it is the ed2k links they have the problem with or horror in general. http://www.realmofhorror.com/ isn't blocked, not at least last time I tried it, so maybe it's the links.

In my company they filter everything. I could not even update my Linux properly. Packages like speex got blocked (delete the first and the last letter and you know why . :lol: ). However, I am software developer and have to work with external developers, who have to have access our repository. This was totally impossible. Our 'administrators' said that it was much too dangerous to open an ssh port for me to our Linux based svn server :lol:. The alternative they proposed was to rent another, independent DSL line, where I could have a totally independent Linux net. Guess who is the administrator and guess who is now the only one with a totally uncontrolled internet access in my company. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Btw, the genius admins in my company are the same, who gave everybody in my company an RSA token to access their Outlook accounts from outside, but do the transfer via nomal, unencrypted html. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

The reason dead-donkey is on lists, and not many other sites of the same nature is that it made it near the top of a lot of post-sharereactor/shareconnector lists of sites.

George, you'd be a yes. Remote desktoping home is a bypass, but i was wondering if there's an easier way. I'm going to test some anonymous networks and see if there's something i can do locally. Remote Desktopping is unfortunately rather slow. :(

who's the network admin? Too embaressed to come out in the light huh? :googley:

I just downloaded something called JAP and am going to test it out. It hasn't filled me with confidence because the installer downloads some bits and bobs and the urls for said bits are blocked at work :wacky:

Instead of using vnc/remote desktop why don't you "proxify" your requests to .dead-donkey.com to a proxy outside your work network? you could set a proxy on your outside machine through a port that isn''t blocked by your net admins, install a little web server on you work pc and write a little .pac file which says something like:

Code:
function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
     {
         if ((isPlainHostName(host) || dnsDomainIs(host, ".dead-donkey.com"))
             return "PROXY ip_of_my_home_proxy:port_of_my_home_proxy";
        else
                     return "PROXY ip_of_my_work_proxy:port_of_my_work_proxy";
     }

Then set "Automatic Proxy Configuration" in your browser to something like: "http://localhost/hhah.pac" and it should work.
of course you shoud set some ACLs on your proxy and your work http server to only allow you to use it...

But the best advice would be just to become friends with your net admin. old school net admins are really nice boys :)

Far too much effort:

Completely solves the problem. For this and all blocked sites.

Score one hhah ;)

lol, they tell you off for using dead-donkey.com? Why?

If its the imagery, unless you live in communist russia or nazi germany then its legal although obviously not appropriate for the workplace. However, that's what the worksafe theme is for.

If its a general objection to the content then they really don't have any thing to stand upon in all fairness.

If its the code of the site, i personally wrote the vast majority of it so i know that's not an issue (or maybe it is :lol: )

Or is it the likely suspect of you visiting it too often?

Security Admins are usually pricks in my experience, they browse no end of shite too, the difference is they don't have to have to deal with bloody security admins.

BTW, i thought i might mention since someone said they got told off, if you use JAP or another application, be sure to use a firewall to block traffic. It works by proxing packets amongst peers, you shouldn't turn it on and leave it running :lol:

tenorbass, schools blocks are about the weakest i've ever experienced. Uni didn't block, my old, old school just couldn't afford any blocking software or decent admins :lol:

@killingjokezzz,

try:

scifi2.dead-donkey.com
forum2.dead-donkey.com

interesting, because i can get on all of them now, without any aliases. Really strange, i wonder if its been removed from a blocklist that people are downloading somewhere.
