don't bother with codec packs, just get what you need here:

Is it true that you need a 64bit OS for using 4 GB RAM?

yes, you need a 64bit word to address more than 4GB of RAM. Its limitation is 16.8 million terabytes before you would need a larger word.

I have been using 64bit installations and find them more stable, faster and should be standard across the board now. The animosity in the early days is utterly dumb founded now, in fact its the opposite, you are stupid to use 32bit unless you are tied into a hugely antiquated legacy piece of software.
