OK, for those of you with an NEC1100A (or thinking of buying one) You can convert the single format NEC1100A into the dual format NEC1300A with firmware from here

And for those of you with a Sony DRU530A you will be able to write at 8x with a simple firmware upgrade which WILL be located here at some point before the end of feb.

Now all I want is the same for us NEC1300A DVD writer owners ;)
So, NEC, if you're listening..........................

writing sux0r and 0th3r such crap is for l0s3rz / k1dd13z :)

NEC aren't too bad, but I'm a pioneer man myself. Plextor are good too.

I got the sony brand, works killer...disk write speed isn't that important to me,I usually burn at 2x anyway because I don't want to take a chance on wasting a goddamned DvD.Which can be quite spendy.

Well cd's are a dime a dozen(literaly). But those dvd-r's are quite a chunk out of your pocket, the Sony I got was the upgrade to the original Dru-500a which went out on me about weeks after I got the damned thing. The one I got now is the dru-500ax and it has given me no problems at all...write speed to me is irrelevent since it is only time.cd's I burn usually at 24 or 12 depending on how many progs I got open at the time.Mind you I picked this up the day it was released so by now it is probably not even available and has been discontinued.300 samckaroos it cost me,now I look around and they have burners for less than 100...that seems to be my bane in life, pick something up and the upgrade appears the next week or it is on sale 50% cheaper than when I got it.
At least sony is good about the firmware releases which is a plus. The main thing I always look for in a dvd burner is this,compatibility..it does no good to have a dvd burner and not be able to make dvd's for your standalone adn the Sony brand when I picked it up was able to burn all formats except DvD-Ram..which is a shit format anyway.

I do have a Pioneer DVR-105, which was the very best on the market, the A06 is ace quality, buy that. or wait for the A07. The only thing that's better is the Plextor but the price is not justified.

i mean, cheap cd-r's can be dead in one year...

how longs a piece of string. They claim 100 years+ but they are too new. Some retail dvds have been know to rot (some from the original batch)

I wouldn't hold your breath for a 100 years though, but the life is said to be that of high quality cds. I'd give em a good 20 years at least.
