Perhaps I shoulda worded my post a little different, I did not mean to make Linux sound like a mongrel at crufts, I don't doubt it's ability to one day level the playing field across the board, but like I said, that day aint gonna be too soon.

I stand by my point about the abilities of users tho, most ppl use the PC for browsing, emails, chat and maybe a little porn when the wife is away, you know the score. For every competent person like us, there must be 50 morons who spend 1.5K on a machine that will never be pushed to even 10% of it's abilities. Mr Joe Public does not particularly care about security vulnerabilites or stability, if it crashes they reboot, just one of those things, a new virus comes along and they just update the AV they have, if any.

I truely believe that a new OS must become "idiot proof", or the abilities of the average user must increase dramatically, before it will kick the crap outta M$

yup i think you hit the nail on the head, for the home market the os must be idiot proof, even more so than XP. Plug and play is essential so is compatability, and having used linux quite a bit, its anything but 'user friendly' in its current stage.

Mac is a lot prettier, but its the compatability front its lacking. Plus it has those crazy mice :D

M$ will kick their own butt when time is ready... so dont worrie about that... but i think ppl that know computers will also want to own their private life and not let a company like M$ do that in the future, the lazy regular joe will ofcourse be M$ test rabbit and feeding his money to M$... but other like me that know better will change to another os in the future...

That was my point doc, us more experienced users are not afraid to change, but we are in the minority. Whatever OS wins in the end will not be the one we can use, it will be the one the "normal" user can get along with.

I know how shit M$ is, but I am stuck with it, I can't be arsed running a dual boot machine, and I am the only one in the house ATM that could handle Linux or something similar, I stick with M$ cos the family are used to it and it is so fookin easy to get software and correct problems. Yes I know other OS's have less problems in general, but finding a decent selection of easy to use software for these OS's is a problem in itself.

Hehe, just stumbled here...

7 years later -> now Apple has become much more evil than MS ever was. Producing gadgets with poisonous components, and denying it's responsability. Old Macs are suddenly not being able to update to the latest OS, and for the latest update of some apps, you need to have the latest OSX...
They monitor even more than M$ ever did. Sending locally stored data without Apple users knowing, from their iPods.
Creating a Wireless hotspot boom, causing an enormous boost of EMR which is known to influence living organisms (yea humans) in rather strange ways (from psychological stress to heating of the body in extreme cases) + it's the most unstable kind of network that ever existed. (about 10% change for probems due to bad signal, and interference between signals)

And Win7 has become at least as stable as Mac OS and most nix's. (That is: can't remember of having one single crash)

Not that M$ is suddenly becoming holy, it's just that Apple has shown it's real ugly face.

I truly hope an alternative will come.
(non-linear Video editing on a unix/linux/BSD is like non-existant, altough VideoLAN is developing an NLE right now)

And in fact, to be honest, the X-windows from the nix-systems is quite shitty in my opinion... (the power hides in the CLI). It's like a config-frenzy you have to go through.
Although I have to admit that it's been more than 5 years since I took a try with KDE or Gnome (X itself is probably not the problem, just never liked that KDE & Gnome things).

I hope for a new Commodore or Amiga system.
Very stable hardware, with a very efficient architecture, and not too much changes over the years, and very standard machines. This allowed programmers to override the limitations of the machine and it makes it worth to learn machine language/assembler to directly command the hardware within. A good machine shouldn't need a lot of OS, but an architecture which is easy to control at hardware level. (This results in enormous speed compared to using high-level languages)

But someone with lots of guts and lots of capital to invest + the will to take a decade for development, (etc...) before such a machine can be introduced and take over a good part of the market...
(My guess is some day a smart game-console designer will release a Personal-Computer-Console which will penetrate Apple & M$ in their backdoor entrance that deep that they'll kill theirselves in a desperate try saving themselves)

Ubuntu 11.04 came out this last thursday; the only thing i can criticise is its TOO open, they've switched from gnome to unity because gnome wasn't open/receptive enough to new features. Yet, you can install xubuntu, kubuntu, gnome, unity, hell... anything.

I'm almost 100% linux now:
x201 (work) = ubuntu 10.10 w/ windows 7 virtualbox for outlook only
x201t (personal) = ubuntu 11.10 w/ virtualbox ubuntu for dev, graphics etc.
Gaming PC = windows 7 (boo!) and ubuntu.

Reasons for sticking with windows:
1) Steam and Gaming
2) Outlook ... its crap but its still the most feature rich mail client.

3) Professional Video and audio editing & production... (except if you like Apple ofcourse, which is an alternative)

I maintain my website on a NetBSD system. I like that one very much and once installed it myself too. But never used X at all. Only CLI.
Lack of decent NLE-software keeps me away from the nix systems. But for anything that concerns networking a *nix based system is the way to go imo.

(oh yea, the games keep me away too, yea steam indeed, and the lack of drivers for a lot of specific hardware too, although that's related to the (semi-)pro AV-computer mostly)

Once these 3 things are solved, maybe the whole bunch of windows users will slowly leak to the nix families. Especially if the copyright police becomes too active one day...

(I should definitely try some nix again some day, maybe purchase an extra HD for it and go dual for a while)

3) There's enough tools out there for video and audio editing, but its the same reason as steam and gaming; the big ones never even consider the market.

btw, not a big fan of unity; i'm removing some of the crap but it feels very mac which means it treats the user like a retard and is very user unfriendly (with shit like docking file menus to the top bar, not the program... awful, awful design choice but easily removed)

3) you know any non-linear video editing software for a 'nix platform? (I'm only aware of a lot of tools for converting, muxing, splitting, ..., not of a program able to do the cutting of a whole movie from scratch, with external monitor preview, layering, keying, ... etc.) (although VLMC is in development)

This one is coming in November: http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ (and it's currently available for Windows)

I'm not into video editing in a big way, but when I was looking for a desktop/webcast capture tool (xvidcap btw), I stumbled across this video editing suite:
