Pioneer demonstrated dual layer DVD-R writing (at 2x) using modified DVR-A06 at CES. They demonstrated it by putting 100Mb of video on each layer (200mb total) and having it run on a standalone DVD Player (Pioneer DV464). they made chapter 1-3 on layer 0 and 4-6 on layer 1 and demonstrated rapid switch between layers. They said although dual layer DVD-R format isn't finalized it should be playable on most standalone DVD players and DVD-Rom drives already in circulation.

Interesting part in all this is, the A06 unit they used was only modified via firmware, they claim no hardware change was made from regular A06. Also they have no plans to release modified firmware, yet.

Pioneer demonstrates dual layer recording at CES, only firmware modification needed
Posted by Jan Willem on 12 January 2004 - 15:33 - Source: AVWatch

Pioneer has demonstrated dual layer burning during the CES, the technology exhibition in Las Vegas. The company succeeded recording to two layers DVD-R in October 2003 and now firstly publicly demonstrated the technology. In the booth of the RWPPI (RW Products Promotion Initiative) they wrote 100 MB to each layer. The discs were read back by a normal DVD player.

Intresting however is that the company used a Pioneer A06 burner with only a modified firmware. According to the company only a firmware modification is needed in order to make a DVD-R drive write dual layer discs. The disc was written at 2 speed. The DVD-R dual layer specifications have not yet been passed by the DVD Forum.

bare in mind though, of course they will be a lot faster come xmas, and there is no garantee they will release a firmware.

The fact of the matter is, however, that this year, when they previewed how dual layer burning will be done, they used a Pioneer 106 ;)

I myself am holding on till I upgrade this year. I'll be getting another pioneer probably unless there's a better make/model released. I supsect it will be the 108 or something by then.

i've finally taken the plunge and have ordered a pioneer 107 :-o

but it's ok since i've not paid for it all (parents wanted some dvd's so they went halves with me i'm such a cheapskate  )so will upgrade to a dual layer (if the 107 won't) at a later date

i had a quick chat with maxpayne about what software is easiest to use to copy DVD's and he gave me a few idea's but i'd like to know what you all think is the best software option for copying as i see SO many softwares out there available and it's confusing the tits off me

so please let me know your opinions and reasonings behind them as i can't be assed to search the board :P

DVDdecryptor for DVD5s and images. Always! If you have a folder of vobs, use imagetool to create an image file and use Dvddecrypter to burn the image.

If you have a DVD9, you have many options. But for speed and quality, try either cloneDVD or DVDcopy2 (I use the latter atm). Basically, you put your DVD9 through DVDdecrypter (iso mode and virtual drive if its for cloneDVD, filemode for DVDcopy2). Point your program to the files and then click copy.

For compilations or whatever, nero is easiest.

I'm waiting for confirmation and stable firmware or a cheaper dual layer burner. Would love one right now... well except there's no media available for them

oh no I believe you, you don't need proof my yound apprentice (although the link is bookmarked now ) :D

I just want to know about reliability. With zero or nearly zero media on the market, I wouldn't want to comment on compatability and future proof. I have a feeling that hardware specifically designed to burn dual layer would be better than something modded to dual layer was what I was partially hinting at. :) If it performs on par I'll probably get one :)

These guys tested it with DL media and here's the results. There's loads of screenshots of mad shit I don't even wanna go near, but probably makes sense to you:

Shame its only DVD+9 though :( Still, there's no media available round here so I'm going to hold off on purchasing one until media is available. However, I am going to put on hold, re-encoding anymore dvds and see if i can make it until the media hits the shops :)
