This is quite baffling, you can play the other two online to a certain degree using a 3rd party mod, Multi Theft Auto... but it seems rockstar are still unwilling to create online gaming for their lifeline franchise:

Why the surprise ? It was pretty obvious the ps2 couldn't handle it properly.... And that mod for the pc isn't what I'm after either - that's more of a elaborate death match.....no story no atmosphere.....just one big arena... But then we're not so far advanced that programming can just generate story at the hand of the achievments of individul participants.... A truly ORGANIC world.... |

its 'easy' to implement, even on the ps2. It's just sloppy cashing in imo. The limitation is in the scripting of events, synchonising pedestrians and cars, all are a mammoth task. However, it is perfectly acheivable for LAN playing. MTA has totally shown rockstar up, without access to any source code or SDK they've modded a great deathmatch/stunt course mod. It would be too hard to mod ped and car sync at this time, but on a LAN the bandwidth is certainly there to acheive this. Rockstar just don't want to waste money do it when they can get big bucks for no work. |
